The teams were tied at one through regulation and one overtime period when Shawn Horcoff scored the winner in the dying seconds as the X-Men completed the 23-team, multidivisional tourney with a per- fect 3-0 record. Fred Jack scored in regulation for the X-Men, who play in an in- terlocking league with Trail and area teams. Horcoff had a goal in the X-Men’s 6-1 win Friday over the Glenmerry Sting and another in a 3-1 victory Saturday over Nelson Esso. Kevin Short, Tony Ponte, Jack, David Pucci and Robert Case, on a penalty shot, also scored for the X- Men against Glenmerry, while Clayton Kabatoff set up Horcoff’s goal with a beautiful centring pass. Kyle Niessen and Case scored the other goals in the win over Nelson while Pucci stopped all but one Nelson shot playing goal for Castlegar. It’s the X-Men’s first tournament victory in their first attempt. In regular season action Monday, the X-Men couldn’t sustain their winning ways losing 4-0 to the Warfield Lions at Kiwanis field in Castlegar. It was the second straight shutout loss in league play for the X-Men, who lost 2-0 to the Sting in Glen- merry last Wednesday. The X-Men’s record drops to 2-11-1 as they get set to meet Beaver Valley here today at 5:30 p.m. The other team in the under-12 division, the Castlegar Kickers, en- ded their losing ways Monday but still didn’t get a much sought after victory in a 1-1 tie with the Beaver Valley Dragons. Ryan Fontes scored the Kickers goal. Tournament chairman Brian Turlock has seen De Biasio come home with a lead in a few golf tournaments and said he's as mentally tough as they come in that position, “He doesn’t have a habit of giving leads away,’’ said Turlock. “He won't, give it to you. Somebody would have had to t it from him and nobody did.”” ’ Some 240 golfers were’ divided Sunflower into six flights — ranging in han- dicaps from zero to over 20 — at the tournament. Ken Sherstobitoff, a Castlegar native living in Winnipeg, and Calgary's Ken Reay, who both trailed De Biasio by oke after Saturday's first round, dropped out of contention Sunday, However, Sherstobitoff won the Jow net in the first flight (4-7 handicap) while Stoushnow won low gross. With a 138, Castlegar’s Jerry Antignani was the overall low net winner. Castlegar’s Jake Koenig was fifth low gross in the first flight while Brian Polovnikoff was second low net in the first flight and Quinto Maida was fourth. De Biasio, 38, adds the Open title to his low score, shot two weeks ago in a two-day event at Christina Lake and Birchbank courses, in the qualifier for the B.C. Amateur. He will play in the Amateur along with Castlegar’s Bill Perehudoff July 16-19 in Van- couver, Despite good weather and ex- cellent course conditions, scores were high across the board in this year’s open, Turlock said. “Brian won at five over par and that hasn’t happened in some time,"”” he said. ‘Usually our winner wins with even par or bet- ter, Maybe it was tournament pressure, I don’t know." Bulls set CHICAGO (AP) — The standing around is over. The Chicago Bulls are ready to run. They spent the last two days in the shadow of a 1-0 deficit in the NBA final, two days of preparing to even the score and considering the dire consequences if they don’t. Los Angeles’ James Worthy, to bounce back recovering from an ankle injury, may be the only player who welcomed the long break between Sunday’s 93-91 victory and tonight’s second game. “These guys had too long to think about’’ the loss, Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. “I'd much rather have played today,"’ Chicago’s Michael Jordan said Tuesday. His Laker rival in this superstar series, Magic Johnson, also was eager to return to the enemy’s court where he directed his team to victory with poise and precision: “You'd always rather be playing than sitting around,’’ he said Tuesday.
