Voice of the people CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 2,.1960 Winlaw school — breath of fresh air Editor, Castlegar News: When up North, I was a liason between the school and community. I worked daily with the principal of a school’ the same enroliment as Win- law's, only K through 12. “I return now with a greater underatanding of a principal's _ responsibilities, his joys and woes. It seems there is no end to the expectations, from parents, school board, students, teach- ers, etc., upon such a role. The principal must answer to and fulfill all. « This broad set of diverse expectations can dangerously limit his power. Yet, there, are ways that a principal can assert his own principles, and thus create the “personality” of a school, : I find Winlaw school a breath of fresh air for this reason; personality. The continued openess to parent input has resulted in a blend of new ideas and a sharing community talent. A model for such sharing is a way of life at Winlaw school. Weekly, the - students display their best efforts, as others, both older and young- er, appreciate. Here is pride in achieving higher grade levels without snobbery and aloofness. Singing and theatrics abound at this school, A child's strong need to per- form {s channeled into accept- able pathways. Excessive and undirected clowning about does not interrupt the serious work. It’s clear there are times for work and listening and for performing. It'e not just work and listening. Winlaw's emphasis on self expression through writing, speech, singing, and drama is, for the kids, a step toward success in the real world ahead. Thanks to a principal who allows the recognition of various budding talents and transmits them into fruitful gestures! * Now, as another year of - school closes, we parents may wish to give a round of thanks to all such teachers and principals who have expanded the gifts of our children. Barbara Bullard RB/ Winlaw, B.C. Performers selected for ‘Oliver’ The sel of 1 roles and ch for the Rossland Light Opera Players’ fall production of the musical ‘Oliver!’ has been completed, with the exception of a couple of minor roles. Director George Ryan said he was very pleased with the large turn-outs for the auditon nights. - More than 100 people have expressed interest in working with the show either on-stage or backstage. This doesn’t include a 28 or 24 piece orchestra which will be put together in the fall. The major roles include Frank Finney as Fagin, Dean Cristofoli as Oliver, Bobby Gardiner as the Artful Dodger, George Borchier as Mr. Buble and Yolande McKinley as Nancy. : Other principals include Jack Fisher as Bill Sykes, Phillis Scaia as Widow Corny, Tammy Van Brunt as Bet, Eleanor Honey as Mrs. Sowerberry, Jim Waldie as Mr. Sowerberry, Dennis McNulty as Noah, Wally Bertoia as Mr. Brownlow, Beverly Moon as Charlotte and Ella Heaven as Mrs. Bedwin. a oo Howl! i owiseett...
