According to the chamber, this year more than 335 visitors stopped by the Tra vel Info office in the first two weeks of this month to ask for information about Castle- gar, the Kootenays and Expo. “Expo is on nearly every- one’s mind” said chamber ad- ministrator Ann Stasila. “Almost two thirds of our visitors are on their way to or from Expo and stop in during the day to find a place to stay overnight. The rest are visi- tors to this area, here specif- ically because of something they saw or heard about Kootenay Country.” Stasila noted that “this year it seems that most of our visitors are overnighters so our campsites, camp- grounds, motels and hotels should be noticing the busi- ness. Almost 15 per cent of the people who visit say they will consider returning to B.C. and to the Kootenays, and is encouraging for in the next few “If we get them for one night and they return next year, then we have them hooked,” she said “Our visitor are now in full swing,” went on to say. “The Castlegar Visitor guide is getting great re views from the residents and visitors and the Castlegar placemap is going into its second printing very shortly We are very pleased with the support we have received from the businesses and the Castlegar community for our Visitor of the Week tourism promotions Stasila CANADIAN LIQUID AIR LTD. Chamber of Commerce tourism director, Marilyn Strong commented “with all the emphasis that everyone is placing on tourism and with support programs such as Superhost and Partners in Tourism we should all be aware of the values and benefits of tourism to this area and what our ares has to Pulpit & Pew By GEORGE JAMES Calvary Baptist Church Another good word from a friend in Ontario: In spite of the. fact that “what lies beyond the grave” is a prevailing question in . most people's minds, very Hugh Keenleyside Dam, Zuckerberg nd, P: Creek Park, National Ex- hibition Center, 18 hole championship golf course, Verigin's Tomb, the view- point from the Salmo-Castle- gar highway and the Douk- hobor museum and res- taurant. “These are the major at tractions that our visitors in quire about and we en- courage them to visit these sites and to enjoy them selves” Strong said. Nelson firemen good sports Teams from Robson, Castlegar, Pass Creek, Thrums and Nelson North Shore competed in the annual SunFest Firemen’s Competi- tion held during SunFest weekend at Pass Creek Park. Other teams were invited but weren't able to attend the competition for various reasons. It was Nelson North Shore's first time at the com petition and also their first- ever competition. The team was awarded the Good Sports Trophy. A new event added to this year’s competition — the men’s house rescue — proved popular. The event involved one fireman rescuing a body (a watermelon) from a smoking house while the rest of the team poured water on the roof. In the men's events, the hose lay make and break competition was won by Pass Creek No. 2, first in 20.96 seconds while Pass Creek No. 1 was second in 30.14 and Robson No. 1 third in 34.04. Castlegar No. 1 was first in the beer barrel while Robson No. 1 and Robson No. 2 finished second and third re- spectively. The bucket brigade was won by Tarrys No. 1 with a time of 35.69. Robson No. 3 was second in 37.48 and Pass Creek No. 2 was third in 41.63. In the house rescue, Tarrys No. 2 was first in 113.01, Robson No. 3 was second in 114.02 while Castle gar No. 2 placed third in 115.92. Pass Creek No. 2 and Robson No. 3 tied for the high aggregate award. In the ladies’ competition, Robson won the hose lay make and break with a time of 33.87. Pass Creek was second in 59.69. Robson won the beer bar rel and Pass Creek was second. Robson won’ the bucket brigade in 55.76 while Pass Creek was second in 107.59. Robson was the ladies high aggregate winner few have the courage to come to grips with it and find out the truth Any who have dared to approach the subject have only done so with the in- tention of denying it alto- gether, or pushing it aside as the speculation of religious fanatics. The very fact that this question keeps surging up within man with great force is in itself proof that man is an eternal being. The Bible says that there are people who live in fear of death all their life. Heb. 2:15. What makes people afraid of death? The Bible says that the sting of death is sin. I Corinthians 15:56. Our sin, whether we know it or not, is what makes us afraid to die, for death is an appointment with the God whom we have sinned against. Hebrews 9:27. I knew a man who shunned water all his life because he didn't know how to swim. One summer however, a friend of his took the time to teach him to swim and then he didn't shun water any more. If you are a person who is afraid of death it is because you don't know how to face death. Instead of joining the throng who make the futile attempt to deny the life beyond the grave why don't you prepare for it? God has made such ample provision for you to have such a blessed life after death that you can even look forward to death. Jesus died for you, and His suffering atoned to God for your sin and cancelled all your guilt. When Jesus was buried He conquered death and rose from the grave. If you believe in Him as your Saviour you shall rise from the grave in a body as He did, and you shall go to heaven as He did, and you will have everlasting life, joy, blessing, peace, riches and glory as He has. Why be willing to deny the possibility of the total fulfill ment of your own existence in the life to come. Would you believe that God can work such a miracle of grace in your heart and mind that you could look forward to death as the most glorious experience you could ever enter into? It is hap- pening to many in this very community, in these days. Friend, life after death is indispensable to the fulfill- ment of God's purpose for you. Surely you cannot be- lieve by any stretch of the imagination that this life with all its suffering, sorrow, pain, hardship, tears, bereavement and death is a becoming com- pletion of man whom God created in His own “image”. Seek — and ye shall find something better and more glorious. Pastor - A.M. Acheson Births & Funerals BIRTHS ANDERSON ‘BLASING To Lin da Anderson ahd Karl Blasing of Nokusp. o girl, born July 15.
