Ave. + 365-6455 Wednesday, October 7, 1992 ArisCLEISURE Neil Rachynski NEWS REPORTER They’re lean, green and mean. It’s The Green Team, and they are on a cross-province tour to promote recycling to students. The idea is to get children Lean and Green motivated about recycling enough that they bring the enthusiasm home. The group is enjoying its second year as part of the Environment Ministry’s Eco Education Program. And this time around, they’ve brought some extra friends — 10,000 red wriggling worms. The Green Team was in the city last week to focus on the importance of composting. Students from Robson Elementary, Woodland Park, Twin Rivers and Kinnaird Middle Schools got a first hand look at what composting has to offer. The idea behind composting is to break down organic food waste naturally. The travelling workshop took a hands- on approach, having students dig right into the dirt and build their own compost box. The students were informed about the importance of worms (The Green Team calls them our friends). The school children started from scratch, building their own bedding with leaves, shredded newspaper and soil. The school kept the compost box for its own use. Organizers considered the Castlegar tour a big success. The evidence was seen in the students’ enthusiasm for the project — something the government is counting on. The program is part of the government’s goal to reduce waste in the province by 50 per cent for the year 2000. News photos by Corinne Jackson These Kinnaird Middle School students learned the finer points about composting and the critical role that worms play in the process. Members of The Green Team are on a provincial tour to enhance recycling awareness.
