THE MINER’S FLOP, At last, after a long period of its customary wobbling, the Miner has discovered which way lie the inter- ests of the people of British Colum- bia, and incidentally of the Miner, in the present political ‘crisis. It " has taken a longtime for the light which has been blazing into the mental vision of hosts of others, to penetrate the opaque covering ot the Miner's brain cells and reach the center of intelligence. But now that the Miner has come to a true realization of Joseph Mar- tin’s character and aims, it analyses them with unaccustomed ability. While we regret the long delay which has preceded this ‘acrobatic flop, we cannot but recognize the people would never give. No sen- sible American, it matters not how honestly he may have been deluded into the belief that the Boers are a wronged people, would advocate in- volving his country in war on their behalf against the nation which is America’s best customer and proved her best friend only two years ago. The. United States interfered in Cuba to remove a public nuisance from their borders and to punish a crimé against. themselves. - But they are not going forth like mod- ern crusaders to right the wrongs of every alleged republic which im- agines itself oppressed by a stronger nation, when-Americans have only the remotest practical interest in the quarrel. . ° -It is doubtful too whether Mr. Sulzer and his friends are sincere in their sympathy with the Boers. There is good reason to believe that they are simply using the latter as a means of embarrassing President McKinley-and manufacturing cam paign thunder for the Democrats. Mr. McKinley has made his offer of diation once and received his an- soundness and force of r 4 by which that feat is explained. Mr. Martin is correctly described as a man playing a part before the peo- ple, not as a statesman. He looks at any measure not from the stand- point of the public interest, but from that of Mr. Martin's personal interest and ambition. If he should be returned to office with a majority of the legislature at his back and if chauged circumstances should make ‘swer. Lord Salisbury’s speech and the successes achieved by British arms indicate that a repetition of the offer would meet with a more emphatic refusal. EDITORIAL NOTES. We hope that in matrimony Mr. Hall will.find a rich paystreak which will never pinch out.
