Wednesday, November 15, 1995 The Castlegar Sun Biography started for former Castle “When I am dead, I hope it may be said, His sins were scarlet but his books were read.” Hilaire Belloc: On His Books Each of us, in his heart of hearts, nourishes the secret dream of writing a book. Preferably this book would be an autobiography, titled possibly: The Story of My Life. Otherwise, it could be an imagined and gripping tale, a written over the years, Some time ago, John entertained the idea of writing a book on the building of Diospaj Nan, (God's way), his shelter in Quito for abandoned children and of the 100 foster children he had raised there. He had made many notes and even had a tentative name for his pro- posed book-—Happy Mother's Day Father. It promised to be as book of fiction fi by our imagination. Or failing this, biography in which we have a guiding part in the selection of the facts for our dream. Most times, the dream fails to become a reality. S the zany and fantastic as its title Unf ly, as Robert Burns wrote, “The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft aglee.” The place which had given him, as he says, “The happiest and most fulfilling years of my life”, facts can be stranger or more i imagined fiction. Such is the case of John Munday, our missionary-teacher friend in Quito, Equador, of whom I have was d d by an eafthq His physical and emotional health was ravaged by overwork and worry and he was forced to aban- don his mission and retum home for heart surgery, followed by convalescence. All his dreams and work lay in ruins. John had come to Castlegar from Victoria at the end of 1949 as the fourth member of the high school staff (Charters, Magwood | OVER MY SHOULDER JOHN CHARTERS and Shkwarok) at the old Rasp- berry school across the river to teach English and French. It was his first such assignment, in a not particularly ideal situation. He was physically a frail man, ner- vous and intense of temperament, a little absent-minded and pos- sessed a fine collection of pho- bias, including a fear of the dark and of unfamiliar foods, On the other hand, he was highly intelli- gent, quite artistic and had a delightful, if slightly zany, sense of humor. Burt Campbell, a carly mem- ber of his homeroom class, recalls him as being “tremen- dously kind and conscientious.” He always had time for students with problems, he said, smilingly accepted the fact French was not a subject particularly boys would willingly study and displayed a Christian, forgiving attitude toward student hijinks, A later Grade 9 student, Catherine Pelle- grine Lee, writes of him as “A very gentle soul, sincere and sen- Sitive to a fault.” After a further three years teaching at Stanley Huinphries High School, he spent about three years convalescing in Canada Then, finding himself a stranger in his own country and Jhis body still unhealed, he returned to the poverty and privation of Quito and the foster children which he loved more than life itself. Now, despite fragile health and grow ing blindness, he reports in a recent letter that he and a group of Equadorian friends have met to form a foundation “to continue the realization of my dreams which started in 1958 and which have not stopped.” The main gar teacher “on health assistance and...help for the abandoned and extremely poor.” And that book? His cousin Tap Munday is spearheading the writ4 ing and publication of “his crum{ bling cousin” in the form of @ biography. He has contacted me for local data on John and several friends and former students haye already contributed reminiscences and anecdotes on him. If any of my readers have any more, pleasd contact me immediately and I will forward them to lan. John's sing are certainly not scarlet, but I would 1ike him to be read. Through a communi- ty funding initiative, we will support eligible projects that enhance, rehabilitate or pro- tect the natural environment. j Projects will require match- ing funds or in-kind:support from other sponsors. The funding initiative will stress measurable environmental benefits and promote action on priorities like air pollu- tion, climate change, biodi- versity, toxic substances and ecosystem conservation. The program will support only non-profit and non-gov- ernmental groups. We are aiming to give national sup- Port to service clubs, seniors’ organizations, youth groups and environmental groups. We want to support car Pooling and transit initiatives because we think it’s impor- tant to reduce vehicle emis- sions and the effects of climate change. We want to support initia- tives that reduce the use of Pesticides and fertilizers in non-farm settings because we think it's important to improve the health status of Canadians. And my hope is we can Particularly give a boost to young Canadians in their efforts to improve the envi- ronment of their own com- munities. Rick Benner is the new pastor for the Full Gospel Fellowship church in the Woodland Park arta, replacing Pastor Stan Block who has moved on to Calgary. Rick, his wife Sally, and children - Eric, Davey, Jenny, and Lisa - are looking forward to their stay in Castlegar. “We've really moved around a lot, so it’s nice to settle down ina different place that is a little clos- er to family,” says Pastor Benner. The Benners have come over from The Pas, Manitoba. Before that, Benner was a missionary and his family lived in Tabuk, Kalinga-Apayao, in the Philipines “We were overseeing seven churches in the area while run- ning bible-school training for new pastors,” says Benner. “The way of life in the Philipines is totally different than from here in Canada.” The Benners lived in Tabuk for three years between 1985 and 1987, and. were there for the ousting of the Ferdinand Marcos government. long time,” says Benner. “At classifieds! With joy and humor, he described the beauty and wonder. He said buman words could not adequate- ly describe what he saw and experienced. He said everything was so lush and fragrant, beyond human rea- soning. It was huge and it was par- adise. There were beautiful, gor- geous mountains, streams, trees and flowers. He saw snow, but it was not cold. There were animals horses ... dogs. He said we will see a lot of what is on Earth because Earth is God's creation. But it will be even more beautiful.
