Six months, im advance Single copy THURSDAY, MAY 6, 1897. LE ROI SMELTER. The Le Roi mining company will no doubt build a emelter for the treatment of the product of its mine and it is un- derstood that it will be of 300-ton per day capacity. In determining the loca- tion there are several things to be taken into consideration. Fuel, freight, water, flux, cost of provisions, and a. possible export duty on ores will probably be the leading points to be considered in the selection of a site. Fuel must eventually be shipped in and the cost of bringing it to Rossland or within a few miles of here would probably make but little difference. So far as water is concerned probably plenty could be secured at the mine, if not arrangements could no dpubt be made with the water works company to supply the deficiency. Ifsmtable rates on coak could be made with the C. P. R. and the C. & W. there could he no better — loca- tion for the Le Roi smelter than in the South Belt within a mile of the incorporate limits of Rossland, on the line of the C. & W. ‘The tramway from the mine to the Red Mountain road could be extended to the smelter. Plenty of water could be easily obtained. Laborers could always be had upon short notice. Should the de- - | Wilson rule. such a bitter pill for that sheet’s lord and master Dan Corbin. Tt must be far from what Mr. Corbin wishes, or he would not take the case to the privy council, Populism is evidently on its last legs in Spokane, The party was turned down at the recent election with a majority of a footing there had it not been the desire of the people to wrest the political con- ¢| trol of the city from the John L, Wilson faction, It wasa choice between two evilsand anything was preferable to The government ot the city has apparently gone back into the hands of the people. ON NEW TELEPHONE LINE. Ten Men Sent Out to Work Between Here and Northport. Ten men were sent out this morning to commence work on this end of the telephone line which is to connect with the American end of the Spokane & British Columbia telephone line. The connection is to be perfected by June 1 and more men will be sent out if meces- sary in order to perform the work. | The men sent out this morning are digging holes for the poles. The poles are all set from Spokane to Northport. ——_— PROSPECTS AND MINES. It is generally the case when a man has a really good mine for sale that he wants several times its actual value for t; there are plenty of good mines for sale, but the trouble is to get hold of them at a reasonable price. It is not an easy matter to estimate the exact value of a mine, owners are not apt to under- over 700, It would never have obtained | ** QUEEN AMONG WOMEN. Power of Sovereignty Does Not Depend on Beauty or Intelligence. There are women who never entirely lose their identity in domesticity. girls they are unconsciously recogn as central figures in the group which gathers around any proposed action, and fare surrendered to when they: speak. They are yielded to asa matter of course by the mothers, and consulted by broth- ers and sisters. In society they com- mand the respectful attention of imen, but are not envied by the women, be- cause they do not enter into competition with other girls for opportunities of flirtation. Marriage docs not operate to divest such women of the power of sovereignty, put their rule is then more generally confined tomen. They are sought by their husband’s male} friends, who form a faithful retinue of respectful admirers. A man with such a wife finds his invi- tations not only eagerly accepted, but very frankly anticipated. She becomes the confidant of some, but that only rarely. Before her, however, they will strive to appear at their best, and aim to be considered even better than they are. Men envy the husband, women pity him. | The power of sovereignty does not de- pend upon cither beauty, intellectuality or even good: It is'as often pos- sessed by the very plain, and it is as fre- uently possessed by those who will sac- rifice anything to ambition, as by those who are pure, By it, humble women rise to places of glittering, but doubtful honor, and by it’ good women become leaders in society and social _ move- ments having ‘some defined pur- pose in view. No woman suc- ceeds among her own sex who cannot value it tl elves, and the ithe admiration of men. Beauty hii hough fine is that the purchaser usually pays more than it is worth. Those who are look- ing for small investments must as a rule content themselves with prospects or partly developed mines. Some of the greatest fortunes have been made in sire to treat ores from other mines it would have a down hill pull from all of them which is a very valuable consider- ation. Years bring unexpected changes, and if at any time, for any reason the Le Roi company should decide to dis- poee of the smelter this location would be favorable indeed for custom work. Ultimately this camp will receive its supply of fuel from the extensive coal fields in the Crow’s Nest Pass, and it is not unlikely that it can do so within the next twelve months. There would be little or no advantage in building at Trail over the site suggested for a few miles haul would make no difference in the price of freight, or at least should not. There is a strong prejudice in the province against building smelters in the United States to treat Canadian ores, and a possibility of that prejudice being carried to the extent of an export duty on ore, would not war- rant the erection of the Le Roi smelter across the line. The Le Roi company has not inti- mated that any inducements for Ross- land was desired to secure the location here, and if it comes to that, we suppose the city will be willing to do anything possible to get the smelter. —_—_—_—_—_ PARIS BELLE CASE. A party, who is perfectly familiar with all the details and law points of the Paris Belle case said to the editor of the Recorp yesterday: “Corbin is negotiating to sell the city four lots on the corner of St. Paul street and First avenue. These lots are on the Paris Belle ground, in fact upon the Zenith ground, which the supreme court decided is absolutely cut out of the Nelson & Fort Sheppard land grant, and that the surface ground belongs to the Paris Belle people. Now Corbin is en- deavoring to get the city tangled up i this litigation, in order to change public sentiment against the mining company. The supreme court having decided that Corbin has no title whatsoever to these lots, it would be very unwise upon the part of the mayor and city council to goon with the negotiation. ie committee was’ very foolish to ever consider the purchase of disputed property, and would now be acting with much more indiscretion in buying these lots from Corbin, to which he has absolutely no title.” The Recorp has written information that the next move of the Paris Belle Mining company will be to get the sur- face rights of the balance of that mineral claim, amounting to 25 acres, by scire facias proceedings. It is proposed to make the Nelson & Fort Sheppard rail- way land grant conform to the subsidy hat way yy has been spent far more profitable in development, and proved a better investment ‘than, the acquiring of a ready made mine. . Of course there is a greater element of uncertainty about a rospect than a mine, but when mining is reduced to a business there is no more speculation about it than in any other commercial venture. Bradstreet tells us that ninety out of every hundred busi- ness men fail. There are many pros- pects that will never be mines; there are mines that through mismanagement, want of experience or does not accomplish it, F form, a face upon which the eyes linger, and a charm of manner do not detract it, because merely intellectual women are rather shunned by men—not by very intellectual men, perhaps, but the queen among women attracts to her side men who are not intellectual and who would be at a loss to account for their adora- ion. There may be physical attractions, but they are only accidental. An arrange- ment of the hair, a trick of the eyes, an indefinable something about the dress, may arouse admiration, but without the inherent capacity to rule they would re- ceive only passing and incidental atten- tion. An intuitive faculty of analyzing and comprehending human nature is one of the ii but that alone their reasons will be failures: but with ordinary care, proper judgment and bus- oness ability, the development of mines will pay larger dividends than most other forms of investment, and the prob- abilities are will yield larger and more honest fortunes than can be made in most other ways.—Canadian Miner. —— HARD TIMES IN JOHANNESBURG. The report is that times are very hard in Johannesburg. The mines are not paying as well as formerly, the ore being of lower grade and more rebellious than formerly, and then the political disturb- ances it isclaimed have greatly disturbed trade, and the streets are filled with tough and idle men, who live on charity and garbage and ‘sleep in caves in the hills.” By the description we judge that the great mining camp has been through an era of wild inflation and_ speculation, and now that the intoxication has assed, the headache is on, the broken hopes and pockets, and that Johannes- burg is a splendid’ place to keep away from. Naturally about twice too many stores and saloons were opened, and there will be hard times until some more strikes are made.—Baker City Demo- crat. A PARTING SHOT. The following ‘‘Parting Ode,’”’ written by a merchant now in Trail upon his de- parture from Vancouver, was published in the Weekly Budget of Vancouver: in| Vancouver dear, I say farewell, You may be glad Tam going. fI the truth am forced to tell, I do not like your doing.
