Keeping the True Christmas Spirit All Year Long The days grow short; the trees are bare. There is frost in . the air and some snow on the ground, The thoughts of tennis in the sweltering sun are changed to being all bundled up on the. ski slope. You realize that once again we are fast approaching “that time of year.” Bright colored lights and streamers adorn the local shops. “Sale Price” signs are everywhere you look and you realize that Christmas is just around the corner. This is a season of mixed emotions. It is usually a busy time for all. Everyone, in his own way, is hurriedly pre- paring for the arrival of Dec. 25. Some will be travelling many miles to join with family and friends for this festive oceasion. Others are planning for a quiet day at home. As plans are falling into place or being changed, we quietly, in the secret place of our hearts, are asking ourselves, “what is Christmas all about?” As the day rapidly ap- proaches, we are drawn further and further into joy and ex- pectation, or deeper and deeper into despair and frustration. The obscurity of the real mean- ing of Christmas is the reason for this despair. The true spirit of Christ- mas has been subtly perverted and distorted through the past centuries. The spirit of giving for giving’s sale has been re- placed with the spirit of giving for receiving’s sake. Unwritten protocol tells us in order to receive gifts, we must first give them. Our giving is further evaluated by the dollar value of our “thought which counts.” Commercialism is the order of the day, and regarding Christmas, it is no different. But yet, the Christ of Christmas, the real Spirit of the season, is still alive. The Lord Jesus Christ is our greatest example bf the Christmas Spirit of giving. Some 2,000 years ‘ago, Almighty God gave to mankind ’ the greatest gift, His only begotten Son. Christ came to earth to give Himself as the payment for the sins of man- kind. He gave Himself, not just to close friends, but for all, even to those who would rebel against God and ignore Him. Christ lives today and gives to each of us the gift of everlasting life. This gift is available not just during. the Christmas sea- son but all year ‘long, and is available to all who will receive Him as his Saviour. This Christmas that empti- ness, despair and frustration can be a forgotten memory, if you receive God's gift for yourself, “,..
