Pulpit & Pew Church There are times when I think that Christians should have as part of our symbolic life, the stethoscope as well as the cross. Of course, the cross is self-evident, in terms of its symbolic level. It reminds us — first of all, of Jesus Christ's sacrifice for us and the consequent re- moval of the burden of our lives to Jesus Christ. The stethoscope can also speak to us. If the cross is a reminder of what has been done for us, the stethoscope can be.s re Christian Phone today and save on everyday office needs. cf CALL 365-6161 minder of what the minds us to stop — to take the time to actively listen to what is going on around us. It reminds us to listen to the rhythms of life in friends, neighbors and family and to listen for the irregularities in those rhythms that may sig- nal problems. The apostle Paul writes that the mouth can speak only what is in the heart. In his time, the heart included the mind — as some refer to it, the “seat of cognition.” It is the task of the mouth to say what is in the heart. We all know, however, that what is in the heart and mind does not always make it to the mouth. Sometimes that’s just as well; often it can be destructive. The ste- Supplies Ltd. Auxiliary starts well 1986 has started well for the South Slocan Chapter of the Kootenay Lake District Hospital Auxiliary. The chap- ter’s executive consists of president Mary Axworthy, secretary Carol Ridge, treas- urer Hazel Varney, first vice- Allenbrand, archivist Merla Ridge and reporter Estelle Barton. Members have given $200 to the Candy Stripers fund and $100 to the hospital library. A letter of thanks was sent to the West Kootenay Power and Light Co. for its $100 donation. The Nelson hospital's New Year's baby received a hand- knit sweater from the group. Five hundred more copies of the Christmas cookbook are being printed. and five members are assembling a Dresdon patterned quilt, materials for which were donated by Olive Muir. A bake sale will be held at the hospital March 6. Tannis Penny will again bake and decorate a cake which will be raffled at the sale. Zena Ursuliak, Director of the Slocan Valley Recreation Commission, was the guest speaker at the January meeting. She suggested that if the many local volunteer organi. zations could meet occasion. ally everyone would find it rewarding. At the February meeting held at Sadie Hammond's workers for the Boy Scouts, told the group of their efforts to raise funds to send four boys to Japan. IN_APRIL 71 to become citizens By CasNews Staff Seventy-one West Koot enay residents — including 33 from Castlegar — will be sworn in as new Canadians in April. According to the Castlegar Multicultural Society new Canadians from Castlegar, Grand Forks, Trail, Ross- land, Nelson, Kaslo, Ymir and Winlaw will take part in the ceremonies. The 33 Castlegar appli- cants represent eight differ- ent nationalities. The residents will have their hearing before a judge at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12 in Castlegar Council cham- bers. Those -receiving their citizenship will be questioned on their knowledge of Can ada. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. April 13 at Stanley Humphries Secondary School with a banquet to follow at 5 p.m. A multicultural stage show will be one of the highlights of the banquet. Mayors and representa- tives from other cities be- sides Castlegar are being in- vited to welcome their new citizens. In Sunday's event, the new citizens will be sworn in be- fore a judge “in great pomp and circumstance,” says Colin Pryce, president of the Multicultural Society. “We did such a good job last year,” notes Pryce. “We already have people (appli- cants) for next year.” Pryce added that some of the applicants for citizenship have been in Canada for 20 years. Last year 85 residents be- came new Canadians. Pryce credits the idea of helping residents to become citizens to Alexia Turner. “It's a good thing for the multicultural society to do,” Pryce added. He said classes for appli- cants will start soon. The classes are intended to pre pare residents for the hear. ing before a judge. wage subsidy up to a maxi- mum of $2.50 per hour.
