THEORY
UNVEILED

UELPH, Ont.-(CP) — Elliott Leyton has a theory
about people like Steven Benson, the heir to the Benson
and Hedges tobacco fortune who killed his mother and
adopted brother by blowing up the family car.

Leyton believes murderers who come from working-
class homes tend to kill people outside their families,
while homocidal offspring of middle-class parents usually
murder their own.

The author of Huntixg Humans, a 1986 study of
serial killers, can't prove his theory yet. But Leyton is.
sure the statistics will back him up when he finishes
researching his new book about familicide

Giving sociology students at the University of
Guelph a sneak preview of his latest work, Leyton
described Steven Benson as the obedient son who never
rebelled and failed to carve out his own career.

Raised to be a millionaire, Benson managed the
family estate after his father died and began siphoning off
his mother's money into corporations that existed in
name only.

He was eventually called to account by the family
lawyer just a week before he got his family into a car
wired with two pipe bombs and then excused himself,
saying he had to retrieve something.

ACCLAIM UNEXPECTED

The explosion killed his mother, Margaret, his
adopted brother, Scottie, and severely disfigured his
sister, Carol Ann.

Leyton's last book was far more of a publishing
success than the Newfoundland anthropology professor
ever expected, he says.

A native of Leader, Sask., he was raised in
Vancouver, taught in Ireland and now concentrates
mostly on the sociology of aggression at Memorial
University in St. John’s

While he considers himself a Canadian figure, his
book did well in the United States, where it sells under
the title Compulsive Killers, and put him on CBS-TV's
Nightwatch and on the pages of the Boston Globe.

His four-year study of scores of serial killers,
including Ted Bundy and David (Son of Sam) Berkowitz,
convinced Leyton these people are not insane, but
programmed by society to think violence is an
appropriate response to frustration.

REJECTS FAMILY

While there has been an explosion of_serial killing in
the United States since the 1960s, there hasn't been a
corresponding increase in Canada, he says

Leyton said the answer to why Benson committed
the murders can be found in his social history — a
nouveau riche family rejected as crass people by the
upper classes of their town.

The Bensons retreated into themselves and began to
manipulate the lives of their children, he said.

They raised Steven, for example, to deal with only
“the superficialities of his status,” not with reality. He
was given no real training in anything, including how to
take over the family empire.

“The children had to be tied to them (the parents) to
the point of obliterating their identity,” Leyton said

When Benson feared the family was about to inter.
fere with the only thing he had been raised to do —
become a millionaire he did the “logical” thing and
“destroyed the family in order to save it,” Leyton said.

“I see this as a tragedy of people caught up in a social
milieu of which they have no control. Everyone was a
victim.”

Benson, who is currently serving a 50-year term ina
Florida prison, never explained his crime.
