Expert urges women to weight lift

Male and female exercisers often
have different goals, especially when
it comes to developing the arms and
upper body, say fitness experts.

Women are more lower-body
oriented, while men concentrate on
developing strong arms and a
muscular chest, says Jo-Ann James,
a fitness consultant and _ certified
trainer with Corporate Fitness Ser-
vices, a Toronto company.

“Women tend to worry more
about areas like the buttocks and
thighs because that’s where their fat
tends to collect,’ says James. ‘‘And
because they tend to focus on their

seem to be exercising their arms and

chest because they want to get big in
those areas — strong arms and a bar-
rel chest are regarded as masculine.”’

But concentrating on one area of
the body is a big mistake, she says.

Men who neglect their legs in
favor of pumping up their arms and
chest can end up with an upper body
that’s out of proportion with their
legs.

And women who work solely on

their legs can also have a body that,
overall, looks out of whack, James
says.
“It’s important for men and
women to work their whole body so
their muscle groups are balanced,”’
she says.

For women, especially, upper-
body strength serves more than just
esthetic purposes.

“It helps them in all sorts of very

basic things, like lifting their
children, changing a tire and even
self-defence against an attacker,”
says James.

For toning, strengthening and
building muscle mass, weight
training is probably the easiest
method and produces the quickest
results, says James.

One common arm exercise is the
bicep-curl, using one dumb-bel! in
each hand or a barbell. Standing
with back straight, grasp the dumb-
bells or barbell with arms straight
down and hands shoulder-width
apart. Raise the weight to shoulder
height and then lower to the starting
Position. Do 10 repetitions, rest and
then repeat once or twice.

is the chest or bench press. It in-

Start with light weights and in-
crease weight and number of sets —
to four — as strength increases,
usually in a matter of weeks if done
a couple of times a week.

There are also arm and chest exer-
cises that don't include weights —
such as stretching, pressing, pushing
and resisting movements that help
improve suppleness and strength.

Women tend to-worry that weight
training may result in too much
muscle development, says the exer-
cise guide Get Strong (published by
3S Fitness Group Ltd. in Victoria).

“But women needn't be concerned
about excessive muscle growth,”’ the
guide says. ‘‘To the contrary, the
changes in body composition that
can come from weight training will
be nothing but positive and
pleasing.’’

James notes that women would
have to do “‘theavy-duty”’ weights
regularly to build massive chest and
arm muscles, comparable to those of
body-builders.

Men, on the other hand, develop
muscle mass much more quickly and
easily, largely because of their hor-
monal makeup.
