An edi in a daily cir g in this area placed itself out, on ‘a very narrow and shaky limb last week ‘when it advocated the est=' ablishment of a rural delivery in this area — Castlegar,’ Kinnaird, Montrose and Fruitvale, If we uke to start making demands’ as ill- considered and shortsighted as that one, we deserve no more than what we will get — that is, rural ‘delivery, from which, heaven deliver us! As we understand it, rural mail delivery is ‘designed and in- tended for extensive, rural areas-with a widely scattered agricul- tural population. In this type of postal service the mail carrier arives along at regular periods during the week and leaves the mails in the mail boxes situated on posts at intervals at the side of the highway. The owners of the boxes may be half a mile or more away from the point of delivery, ding upon their to the larger and better roads, and delivery may be once to, three times a week, de on the i of the route, condi- tion of the roads and other factors, _ Castlegar, Kinnaird, Montrese and Fruitvale and other centres ‘in this area: not 1 agri i but are rather residential concentrations. .In fact, they are even now sufficiently compact so that no one has to travel:any great distance to get their mail, and they can get it everyday not just once or twice a week as would probably be the case in a rural: delivery. é Secondly these centres are becoming steadily larger and more concentrated day by day and it is time that our thinking kept pace with our growth. If were growing up, let's at least make grown-up and sensible demands, The obvious step in an area-of concentrated population is most certainly not rural delivery but carrier delivery, and if we want carrier delivery, within the next few years, the time to start asking'for it and preparing for it is now. Fire Chief Lewis has already poihted out the urgent need, in ion with i fire iti for the of proper street and avenue signs and a plan for house numbering. The very same recommendation holds true if we are even going to think of a house to house delivery system of the mail. We repeat then, if we want mail delivery, then house to house delivery is the only sensible solution. And if we want house to house delivery we've got to show that. we mean business, by laying the necessary ground- work for such a system, and now is the time to start, ~ Cam's “The Thing | A ‘We are pleased to offer, this week, a guest editorial by ‘that seldom heard from but vital member of the staff, the printer. , “(By George Tonnellier) of the C Kinnaird The ti league ‘this year - has brought to many the opportunity to participate in the district's leading sport.
