A dainty cap of Venice lace and pearls secured her finger- tip veil of matching lace and she carried a bouquet of pale orange mums and dahlias, interspersed with forget-me- nots and baby’s breath. A film, “Fragile, Handle with Care", will open the eve- ning with a p: of munity who are in positions where they encounter children on a regular basis. Nurses, teachers, Day Care supervisors, those in the recreation field, or “just neighbors” — ali should be aware that child abuse does occur and should know what to do and where to go if they do see a child in need of help. The information evening, which is co-sponsored by the Kinnaird-Valley Vista Parent Teacher group and the Koote- nay-Columbia Child Care So- ciety will hopefully contribute a ¢ three cases of child abuse, 2iid emphasis on how the situa- tions were handled following ery of the problem. Meetings are held once a month in the home of one of the group members on a rotating basis. A specific topic for dis- cussion, a guest speaker, or a film is featured at each meet- ing. Social get-togethers on a spontaneous basis are held, some of which involve children, For example, one Sunday after- noon, several members met at the Nelson Aquatic Centre with their children. Parents took turns watching the smaller children in the shallow pool, so that every person could enjoy other facilities of the centre. “Minus One” is a non- profit organization and is not Resident Peter Shewchuk, Dies : Rosary was recited Friday evening and funeral mass held Saturday morning from St. Rita's Catholic Church in Cas- tlégar, for longtime area resi- dent Peter Shewchuk, 85, who died last Wednesday at his home. 2: Born in the Ukraine on July 11, 1893, he emigrated to Canada in 1925, followed by his wife and son in 1928, and had resided in Castlegar since that timp. In 1934 he purchased the land which was to become his hore for the remainder of his life. - He was employed by the ceR as a section hand for 32 yenrs, retiring in 1958. > During World War I, Mr. Shiewchuk served in the Aus- trian Cavalry and the Ukranian Ariny. His war-time experi- ences included time spent in Russia as a prisoner of war at an. ‘Iron mine. He also volun- teered to serve as a hospital orderly during the typhus epi- demic at a prisoner of war camp. Mr. Shewchuk was a mem- ber of St. Rita's Parish of the Roman Catholic Church. The . Shewchuks recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniver- sary. He is survived by his wife, Magdalena; one son, Bill, of Port Coquitlam; three daugh- - ters, Mrs. John (Anne) Harris * of Nelson, Mrs. Cliff (Helen) _ Smith of Calgary and Mrs: Walter (Ruth) Parfeniuk of Castlegar. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two children,in the Ukraine. Father M. Guinan offi- ciated.
