The two-day Kootenay Columbia District Cub Cam,
,at Cayuse Creek in May saw 83 enthusiastic boys attend
from 2nd Castlegar, 1st Kinnaird, Robson and Blueberry
packs. Three Kinnaird Scouts, ‘Steven’ Jerome,’ Robert
Grazziato, and. James Welychko, helped’ with the
program and earned citizenship credits. Hy
Alan was first-aider. Loyd “took:
: charge of campcrafts, naturelore, ‘games: and stories,
while Jim Waldie led the Saturday evening campfire.
Camp chief Candis Jerome was assisted by leaders
Mike LaHue,’ Joanne Hargreaves, George Ritson,”

It's true. Thirty-four incredible flying machines landed
on Duck Lake recently. After hearing the news, I gladly

abandoned my dinner, slung my binoculars’ around my neck *

and headed off for the south dike with hopes of seeing this
endangered species. se hy
What magificent creatures they are! With large white

bodies, 214-metre wingspans, crested heads, long bills and i
enormous yellow throat pouches, they are easily identified

as White Pelicans.
The White Pelican feeds almost entirely on fish with
each adult consuming up to two kilograms daily. The birds

use an interesting cooperative method of fishing. While ‘
swimming in a line towards shore they cause a commotion by

flapping their wings and splashing. In this way they drive
the fish into shallow water where they are, easily caught.
And yes — that naked throat pouch does hold more than the
stomach can. :

The pelicans are highly social and gregarious — feeding,
roosting, flying and nesting in flocks. After overwintering
along the southern coastal regions of the United States and
Mexico they return north to their nesting grounds.

: The breeding habitat of the White: Pelican is very
specific. ‘The colonies‘ nest solely on remote inaccessible
* islands of interior lakes. The females usually lay two eggs
which are incubated by both sexes for 36 days. The young
leave the nest three to four weeks after hatching and make
their first flight when they are about 60 days old.
. Unfortunately, there is only one known breeding colony
of White Pelicans in B.C. Across Canada there are only 30,
with a total breeding population of 15,000 pairs. Since the
turn of the century over 25 breeding colonies have been
abandoned. The population decline has been blamed on
direct human interference and habitat changes — mainly the
draining of extensive wetland areas.

In British Columbia the White Pelican has been on the
provincial endangered list since 1980. This ‘endangered
status includes i diately facing extinction in
B.C. and requi special ive. or enh:
measures.or both to ensure their survival.
