its homicide report for 1984.

The largest single category of victims is made up of
single males between 20 and 29 who are usually shot or
stabbed at home by someone they know, likely a relative.
Alcohol or drugs often contribute to the killings and the cul-
prits are generally single males about the same age as their
victims.

Of the 18 per cent of victims who were under age 20,
more than half were under 10.

The centre reported last winter there were 667 homi-
cides in 1984 but the latest report provides more detail about
the circumstances surrounding the killings.

SHOWS INCREASE

A preliminary report for 1985 showed 689 Canadians

were victims of murder and lesser offenses resulting in

killing, accounting for 62.6 per cent of all homicides, followed
by beating at 16.9 per cent and strangulation at 6.9 per cent.

About 14 per cent of all killings happened during gene’
criminal acts — most often robbery, theft or break and
enter. One-fifth of the 93 homicides committed during
another offence happened during a sexual assault.

HAPPEN AT HOME

Almost 54 per cent of all homicides took place in either
the victim's or killer's home, followed by 17.5 per cent in a
public place and 13.6 per cent in the workplace or a private
place other than a home.

Although almost half of victims were killed in their own
homes, the proportions vary between males and females,
with 60 per cent of women victims killed at home compared
with 38 per cent of male victims.
