We went up to the battered ghost town of Sandon where he grew up and we visited other places of historic and scenic interest as well. It was all in: preparation for some tours of the ghost towns of the Slocen and Lardeau that | will be conducting for Selkirk College this summer, and by the way, the col- _ lege would be very pleased to give you any information "you want about these two-day trips. The snow still lay on the ground in the woods around Sandon, thus preventing us from visiting the nearly-for- gotten cemetery at the northern approaches to the town, Tomb-stone crawling can be a lot of fun, and at our next stop, Kaslo, we hit pay dirt in the upper graveyard. We found the grave of an old friend of ours, William Francis Clarke, better known in the Duncan Lake country as Billy Clarke. Billy died in 1970 after being driven from his lakeshore home at Howser by the building of the Duncan Dam. Alas, no stone marker stands over Billy's grave, just a little plece of metal with his name typed on a slip of paper. Billy deserves a granite, marker, and it should contain these words: “Billy Clarke — Storey Teller.” That was what Billy was, a first class story teller. Some of them, it is true, might have been padded a little here and there, but they were all worth remembering, [t was Billy who introduced me'to “the immortal: horsethief” and \'ve been grateful to. him ever since, The rustler in mind was “Red Moore”, who. also sleeps in an unmarked grave in Kaslo. As a boy, Billy knew * Red and remembered the time Red got shot up in a slightly * crooked poker game at Argenta in which mysteriously 9 fifth ace slipped into the deck. Thereafter, Red stuck to horses, He planned his professionat career with exactness — never, he said, go to jail in late spring, summer or early fall. Winter was the only way to go if you had to go to all. One day in Howser he stole a horse and took It to Kaslo to sell. On his return to Howser he was not surprised that the owner was furious and although Red was, strangely: enough, not a suspect, he told the outraged horseman he'd see if he could get it back. So' down to Kaslo went Red, and he stole the horse from the man he had sold it to and returned it to the Players to Tee Off Every Eight Minutes At the Big Castlegar Open This Weekend Here are the tec-off thmes for the Castlegar op- en be held on June 3 00 — T. Then the man who had bought the stolen horse was furious that his new horse. was stolen, and it must be said that Red felt sorry for him. But it puzzled Red: How. could a man be sorry about losing something that wasn’t legally his in the first place? Well, anyway, Red decided to leave town just in case somebody started to probe into this transaction. If they did, Red figured he might have to go to jail, and this wasn't the time of the year: for-it.
