What's made it possible is the fact that computers have suddenly sprout- ed like mushrooms on the factory floor. They're described by a variety of acronym like CAD and CAM, CNC, and MRP, but ulti- mately they're all contributing to THE SCIENCE Counci oF B.C. immensely more useful than the old pencil and paper drawings because in reality, the computer stores a complete three dimen- sional mathematical description of the car—every contour of the body, every gear in the transmis- Sion, every tiny detail of each engine part. While all of this is happening, the ‘production managers need to ensure orderly flows of raw mate- rials into the plant, and finished products out. They track these materials using—yep—computer But today, all the manufacturer has to do is switch from computer program “A”, the one that pro- duces the sunroof version of your car, to Computer program “B", the one that produces a conven. ible with power brakes and steer ing. That's an oversimplification of course, but it does explain the essential differerice between. old and new manufacturing, It also explains why you can now order your car—-and just about every- thing else—with so many differ- ent options. Here in B.C., a 1991 study by Coopers and Lybrand found thai the majority of advanced manu- facturing firms were still in the early stages of adopting the new manufacturing technologies. But as Dennis McJunkin, past Manu. facturing Champion for Science Council of B.C. explains, “B.C has never had a large manufactur- ing sector like Ontario. Instead we have a lot of small fabricators and custom jobbing shops that provide services to primary man- ufacturers such as forestry and mining operations.” On the surface, that doesn’t sound like a good scenario for growth. Today’s world market are dominated by very large manu- facturers who can afford to target a specific market and wait for twelve months or more until the first ordér arrives. But because of recent changes in the way these large companies are doing business, McJunkin thinks advanced manufacturing hnologies might soon take off software called Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRP). These are just some examples of a whole range of software based tools that are collectively referred to as “flexible automation tools” The key word is “flexible”, Tra- ditional product lines were diffi- cult and costly to set up. Well paid and highly skilled tradespeople had to create precise jigs, fixtures and dies that would shape the individual components of the product. Each separate machine involved in the produc- tion process had to be set up to exacting standards by hand, then monitored to see how well it was performing. here too. “There's an increasing trend toward manufacturers who have d world-wid d to make products for a very spe- cific market niche,” says McJunkin. “It’s becoming an essential way of life. If our companies can become better at marketing and secure global product mandates, it then makes sense to begin adopting the kinds of advanced manufac- turing technologies they need to make their specific products.” In some cases they don't have a choice any more. It could be a case of “automate or evaporate.” Kitop putting it off. Start taking it off! Now! This disclo- sure was very painful for her and, of course, for me as well as the rest of our family My father-in*law, who is a “Barry” at work and turned him in. He served a short jail sentence, and I decided we should separate. Both my daughter and Barry have been in counseling ever since. I feel OK about Barry see- ing the children. Our son is now 7, and our daughter is 11. I am quite comfortable about him being granted supervised visitation rights. I still care for my husband but will not endanger the well- being of my children by leav- ing them alone with their father. I have done a great deal of reading on the subject of child molestation and have had many discussions with counselors. All the research I have done has not turned up a single instance of a perma- nently “cured” child molester. It would be a com- fort to believe that my hus- band is completely rehabilitated and- will never do this again, but I am not sure My question to you is this: Are there any “former” molesters out there who are truly recovered and do not molest anymore? — No Name or City Dear No Name: I, too, have done a good bit of research on child molesta- tion, and according to the experts (I am not one), the only molesters who can be considered permanentty Metro Quiz-Cross amd Take unlawfully Bridge-building degree Empty area between things Mixture of gases required for breathing Possess Characterized by opposite extremes Tributary of the Mobile River __ of Troy (Spanish) Company that rings receipts Waterproof raincoat Not neg 2.
