Time to accept God’s invitation “GRACE IS NOT LICENCE”! “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, .... for thou art with me... Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me..” Psalm 23:4 The Psalmist David could express the conviction above, because he lived in daily fel- lowship with God. He allowed God to guide and direct his life, and so he could truthful- ly say . . . “The Lord is my shepherd!” John Newton 1725-1807 did not live a life of daily fel- lowship with god in his early life. He, like many persons in our day, lived mainly from pleasure and the acquiring of wealth. (He made big money, transporting African slaves to America!) One day, he heard the Christian gospel being proclaimed, and he realized what a despicable sinner he was! He longed for forgive- Pulpit & Pew Church of God Pastor Ira JOHNSON ness, but he despaired of any hope that God could forgive what he had done, even though he quit the slave trade and had begun to make what amends he could. To his amazement, God honored his confession of need, and: as- sured him of forgiveness. Out of that experience, John New- ton wrote the words of a sung that has become one of the all time favorite gospel songs: Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, Tonce was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see! The point that we must not miss, is this! God’s love and forgiveness have been made available to all who respond to the amazing grace he offers! No sinner is too great or too despicable, provided there is true repentance, and an open confession of faith in Christ as savior. But if we persist in our neg- ligence and sinfulness, we can- not expect to experience God’s presence in this life, or as we go through the Valley of the Shadow Death. God’s grace, we do not deserve, but he of- fers it to the sincerely repen- tant sinner. God’s grace is not a licence to continue in our un- godly ways.... but an invita- tion to begin a life of true fel- lowship with God and our fel- low men! Have you accepted God's in- vitation?
