CosMews photo by Ed Mills Looney continued from Al Until recently, the banks were made almost entirely out of pinewood, with an empty weight of 2.25 kilograms and a capacity for 600 coins. However, Charlton has now branched out and also makes solid walnut banks, one with the same capacity as the pinewood and another “‘little looney bank”’ with a 50-coin capacity. He said he’s just getting the little ones out to Stores now and has sold three of the regular-size walnut banks. In addition to the banks sold in retail storés, Charlton’s banks also serve as donation collectors. The Red Cross in Castlegar and the Okanagan has about 40 placed in stores‘and banks, displaying the Red Cross logo, for fund-raising. Charlton is also working on a larger model that he’s “trying to get. fundraisers interested in.” It stands about .9 metres by 1.5 metres, is enclosed in glass, has about 15 movements and would be suitable for setup in a mall, he said. As well, Charlton is looking at tapping into the U.S. market. With a few modifications — which includes changing the Bank of Canada plate to simply read Bank in old-fashioned lettering — the U.S. version would run off the American 25-cent coin. “But, it'll be convertible because they will have $1 coins in the near future.”” ile. Gayle continued from Al “She'll probably do well for the middle age and older people but you probably won't get any young kids there (at the con- cert),”’ said Swetlishoff, who is 24. As alternative selections Swetlishoff suggested the Ken- tucky Head Hunters or Dwight Yokum. “You'd get all sorts of people for them, and you’d have the younger crowd too,”’ she said. Regardless of how Swetlishoff feels, she did admit the record store — which in fact only sells tapes and compact discs — is or- dering more Crystal Gayle music to meet the expected demand. Other artists lined up by Music "91 to play the Kootenays include Joan Baez who will play in Nelson, Tom Jones in Creston and Anne Murray who perfor- med in Trail April 27. Globe reporter Robert Mata writes in this past Monday's issue of Canada’s national newspaper that “D'Arcy minimized the importance of Vander Zalm’s actions, observing that the former premier did is this working or what is regionalization doing? Mata quotes the MLA, whose riding now includes Salmo, as saying ‘‘The jury is still out’’ on Vander Zalm until an RCMP investigation into his activities is completed. The NDP rebel says his constituents are more concerned about a sawmill in the area that shut down, another mill that has declared bankruptcy and changes at Cominco’s operations at Trail than they are about the controversy about the Vander Zalm family business. Sharon Giza, who along with her husband, John, owns a campground at Salmo, told the Globe’s B.C. bureau reporter that Vander Zalm isa Politician ‘who showed that he cared about them. He phoned when Mrs. Giza was sick; he sent cards when they celebrated birthdays.”” Giza said the gestures may not mean much to those who are often exposed to Politicians ‘*but we are just another couple in the province.”* Bakken, long one of Vander Zalm’s staunchest supporters, told Mata she was part of a network of People across the province that the former premier Phoned regularly to gauge the impact of federal and Provincial government policies. “*He'd say we are his ears, the Globe article as claiming. ‘ Bakken is quoted in ike, he'd say: ‘How g class at a ity in Langley.
