MARTIN’S DOWNFALL. The audacious usurpation of pow- er by the Martin government and Governor McInnes has come to an end, only enough of Mr. Martin’s | supporters being elected to the leg- islature to show that there dre‘a few constituencies which can be swindled with political gold bricks. Plumpers seem to have carried Mr. Martin himself through in:Vancou- ver, but he was defeated in Victoria and two of his miisters—Messrs. Beebe and Yat ‘h gone down but i body which will see to it that industrial interests are not neglected. As the winning party is strongly pledged to satisfy all the reasonable demands of labor, there is no reason why Mr, Smith’s sup- porters should not co-operate with the government which will be formed. Eastern papers have been amus- ing themselves at the expense of British Columbia because of the large number of parties in the field. Under such circumstances, it is the greater cause of gratification that the Corservatives and those few of other federal and local parties who are ready to co-operate with them have an ample majority over any combination which could_be formed against them. This fact assures the province what it needs far more than experimental ‘laws—a strong, stable government, ruled neither by d wogues nor backs, which canhold office throughout a term of ‘the legislature. EDITORIAL NOTES. As John C. Brown contemplates the fat job he left for the cabinet job which he is so soon to lose, he must think that George Kennedy was wiser in his day and generation than John C, Brown, © Three of the five members of the Martin cabinet survive the cyclone. The defeated candidates. are now busy explaining how it happened. One‘explanation will do for all—the other man got more votes. For sale cheap—A lot of second- hand political platform !umber. Ad- dress, Joseph Martin, Vancouver, B.C. Coo. G. W. Beebe’s career as a cabi- net minister was brief and meteoric. The job lot of curios which Mr. Martin put forward as candidates will now return to the backwoods, whence they came. Now let’s forget all the mean things we have been ‘saying about one another and talk about some- thing else. . Ralph Smith did not do a thing to Yates, The next thipg to figure up is the of revenue accruing from to defeat with him. The Conser- vatives and their accepted allies will have a sufficient majority to form’a strong stable government without depending on any of the scattered elements of the opposition to Mar- tin, > The defeat of Gov. Mackirtosh in this riding is a misfortune, not only to the riding itself but to the whole province. Had he elected, his ripe experience in mu- nicipal, parliamentary and adminis- trative offices would have secured for him a} strong voice in the new government, and Rosslar.d and the .Boundary country would have ben- efited accordingly by an intelligent, constant attention to their wants.’ As it is, this riding will be repre- sented by a member of a small minority party, which has bzen overwhelmingly voted down by the country as a whole, and it will fare accordingly. ‘ It was highly desirable, not only in the interest of the whole country but of Kootenay especially that this section should be represented by a solid del it of the winning party. These six men could then have with those b. from other interior districts to com- pel proper attention from the meni- bers from the mainland coast and the island to the peculiar needs of the interior. There has been a slaughter of leaders. in this election, both Mr. Wilson and Mr. Cotton having gone down to defeat at Vancouver, to keep company with Gov. Mack- intosh in Rossland. This will com- pel the party line Conservatives to either find p seat for Mr. Wilson or been’ forteited deposits. Just about now Gov. McInnes _ is wondering how it will feel when the official axe takes off his official head. Rev. E. E. Dixon, of Stroudburg, Pa., has gotten himselt into a_pre- dicament. He prayed for lightning to strike a certain brewery and it did, destroying the hated industry. The owners are suing for damages aad Mr. Dixon denies responsibility, thus questio. fig the efficacy of ‘his own prayers. Hereafter when’ the reverend gentleman prays against breweries, he will probably not it yet hit.
