All these compla‘nts and suggestions would come with better grace from almost any one else. Mr. La- londe could afford to be a@ little less faultfinding and a little less resentful. He was tairly beaten, and by a compar- ative stranger too, in the town, while Mr. Lalonde was hly known. His memory is too good for him to be a good politician, but his memory isnot longer than other people’s. He carries an advertisement of respectable propor- tions in the papers that supported him for mayor and declines to continue ad- vertising in the Recorp, ing that “it is only right for me te stay by my friends.’? The Recorp voiced the sentiment of the people of Rossland when it stated that the time had not yet come when it was to the interest of this camp to advo- cate an export duty on ore. The public meeting last night demonstrated that fact, for there was not a voice to advo- cate it. There are three weekly news- papers and two dailies. All other branches of business are well represented. ‘The popula- tion is variously estimated from 6000 to 7500. Board and ledging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $2.50 to $7 per week. It is useless to write and ask ifany particular business would pay here. Everybody must be his own jadge and take his own chances, While there is not work tor all whoiaquire, most sober, indus- tiious persons who really wish to work have sofar been able to obtain it. We would not advise any man to land here ‘‘broke” without friends, although many who have done so are doing well. This camp is now settling down on a business basis. The populace is engaged not only in working the mines and conducting the busi- neas of the town, but are buying. or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying and eelling real estate; building houses for rental purposes, prospecting and staking prospectors. Many are here simply lookingon in won- derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of a pay rol! but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested.
