RPE YR Aimer sB PI TERT B4 CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 16, 1980 RRS AT One man's opinion Everybody will miss Henry By FRED MERRIMAN I don’t care what any- body says; 88 years is a long, long time. A 65-year-old man called Henry laid down his writing instrument for the last day of 8 span of 38 years with the same company. It happens quite often in these parts. However, you will find less of that sort of longevity in the work place as the impatient young work through years of dissatis- faction he derives from his employment hinges on the size of his pay cheque. He ‘cheats himself and he cheats his employer. Henry wasn't like that, I. interviewed Henry Ericson and found out that he started with British Colum- bia’s second largest power company in 1942 as a clerk in the, retail store. After a three-year stint in the RCAF he returned as an electrician. In due course he was pro- moted to a clerk in the accounting section in the days when all clerks wore jackets and ties, addressed their supervisors by their surname, and stood at waist- high sloping wooden desks. He liked and respected his supervisors. He didn't say so but the “old school” could invoke a sense of fear in their subordinafes. If you were a product of the Gread Depres- sion, as was Henry, a job could also mean survival. It also explains why Mr. Eric- son held.so tightly to the philosophy that a penny saved was a penny earned. Some people felt Henry should jhave been more ap- had heard of him, . .like a legend alive and well, thank you. : He showed me a note from a senior executive who asked for his opinion on some labor relations matters be- cause His long service and stable philosophy would allow an objective opinion based on 2 certain continuity. . of approach. Henry was justly proud to be asked and equally proud of his written reply. Everybody will ‘miss Henry for one reason or another. Could the farm boy from Buchanan ever know that his came from an era where a man derived his own satisfaction from a job well done. On the other hand every- body will miss a man who has seen many come and go. “Henry will fix it.” “Ask Henry.” Everybody in the com- pany either knew Henry or would one day appear on the cheques of a multi-million dollar: corpora- tion and that girls would kiss him and throw paper ribbons more in keeping with wedd- ings than retirements? He would not have believed it possible. Uncle Henry was more like our brother. . .a wiser brother.
