ISLAND FIRE DARK SIDE OF THE DREAM “The world is too much with us,” wrote poet William Wordsworth, “Late and soon, getting and spending, we lay waste our powers.” “Care”, says the writer of Ecclesiasticus, “driveth away sleep.” Since the world has been getting just a bit heavy on my shoulders and since sleep is becoming more and more of a luxury, we are going to back off a little on this and on ran suasbdetelond Wes the tend cate ee p, consolidate and let the soul catch up with a rapidly tiring body. I feel guilty as hell about this but the corner is getting too tight for comfort, and there it is. In order to keep this space open, however, I will do some looking back, reruns of columns and observations of 30 years ago. It is surprising how much and how little has changed over that time. I will also interlard thesé with work by special correspondents and items of interest as they appear. But before I do there are a few loose ends to gather together. First, of course, is the island park. I firmly believe that every community must have at least one focal point, ing by which it is in the minds of citizens and outsiders. Thus, to think of Edinburgh is to think of “the castle,” not the vast conglomerate of a major city. To think of Ottawa is to think of the parliament buildings, or when one thinks of the city of York it is not the vast panorama of 2,000 years of history but of York Minster which comes to mind. All the rest comes trooping in behind. They are places to which one rom or acs rieycod iano not because of their hich reflects the eity, but because of epecial qualities, subtle Castlegar has the island — “our islind” — unique and yet linked in a web of ways to whole generations of local citizens. It too is a place to which we take friends and visitors to be shown off with pride. Peredesteely, ty four years ago it was known to the merest handful of people and even to fewer outside. Today, it is known to the great majority of the community, and of hundreds around the continent and across the oceans. It is an essential part of our past, our present and our future. Then there is a matter of Tuesday's fire. For those of us closely associated with it, it has been the dark side of the dream — a threatening almost unthinkable shadow. When we arrived at the chapel house Tuesday afternoon and saw the flames leaping out between the logs of the front wall, crackling and climbing up through the porch roof, the nightmare became a reality. When the inside of the house proved to be so filled with dense smoke that the main switch was ible to locate , a sticky or of minds, only hands. I guess it's always later than we think. ‘Then there is my other favorite topic, the Abbey in Mission — the candle in a darkening world. Some of my readers will remember Brother Francis Dodson, former bon vivant, bandleader and disc jockey turned Bene- McDonald clown to the sick children in hospital. He died last November after a valiant struggle with Hodgkins disease and his passing was felt deeply by the monastic community, by his students, by the scores of sick visitors who came for counselling and who went away strengthened by his strength, courage and faith; I suspect that many child visitors still saw him as a black gowned clown who did funny tricks and miss him most. He was a remarkable man and I was pleased to read in a recent Oblate newsletter that the British Columbia Country Music Assocation had enrolled him, post- humously, in its Hall of Fame. In the meantime life in the monastery not only goes on, but the monks are well into the construction of a new dormitory for the novices, a major project for which susbscriptions are still coming in steadily. A full page article in the Sunday Province quotes Father Augustine, the rector for the seminary, as that the number of novice candidates has gone end of asphyxiation or electrocution was a distinct possibility and the reality darkened. Witt ‘n this brief interval, Fire Chief Bob Mann, who had arriv. 1 on the scene hot on our heels, had the first firemen operating the hoses — and not a second too soon. The flames were already licking the eves of the house so that the early arrival of that small fire truck made the up 1,000 per cent in the past year. Father Augustine told the reporter that he wasn't particularly surprised at the dramatic increase in prospective monks and that so many young men, recently having sown their wild oats, were turning again to the 1,500-year-old Catholic order. Then he added (doubtless wee a humorous twinkle in his eye), “Why, even St. ine shacked up with a lady at 17 and had a son between a di d, but wall, and a shell. At it was the nightmare dissolved in the first shower of spray and the quick arrival of more men, machines and hoses soon put an end to the game of hide- and-seek that the flames were playing with the firemen. On behalf of us all — the heritage advisory committee, citizens and all our visitors — I would like to thank both Mr. A. Johansen and any others for promptly turning in the alarm, and Chief Mann and the firemen for their swift and efficient action. Their fast response has preserved an invaluable and irreplaceable part of our heritage. The work of restoration has been delayed, but only delayed. This is a project whose time has come and so it will. I think the best example of this is the reaction of restoration superintendent Alex Lutz. Tuesday afternoon he was the picture of sorrew and despair. But Wednesday he was roaring with impatience because the fire marshall, police and insurance investigations were preventing him fronr getting back to work in the house. Other related matters are waiting in the wings — se rentcaek clay of al eee) Cee wee the CPR station {concerning which the committee meets balers be tanned to God. He used to pray — ‘Lord, give me chastity — but not too soon.’ " I look forward therefore to my semi-annual teaching stint at the Abbey in October-November and to seeing the monks again. I look forward particularly to seeing St. Frances of Rome, patron saint of children, again. She and her young ones were just about to be poured in plaster of pds tle csi cells Martel onli ge recast in te and py d place on the wall of the Abbey church. I rier’ such an interest in her in her clay (first) stage that the sculptor, Father Dunstan, threatened to tell Bunny, but admitted at the same time that “the church needed a woman among all those men.” Now I have a sign. Just as I was finishing this column I got a phone call after eight months of innumerable mis- directions, delays and extended waits. It was from VIA Rail. The trip-I won for the Zuckerberg story starts late next week and stops a number of other plans dead in their tfacks. It looks as if not all of the next few columns are going to be from “over my shoulder”. with the company rep ive next Thursday), a pathway beside the river past the island, Harry Killough's historic walk on the hill.
