The youth volunteers will comb the beaches of Sooke, about 20 kilometres west of Victoria, for dead or dying bir- ds and other oil-soaked debris. “*Right now they are picking up about one bag of debris aday— maybe a bit of oiled kelp or something,”’ Karen McDougall, administration manager for the provincial emergency program, said Monday. The oil slick was discovered Thur- sday morning off Whiffin Spit in Sooke. (CP) — Devastated by sexual abuse charges, the Mount Cashel orphanage for boys will be closed, bringing its 90-year history to a bitter conclusion. Brother Frank Hepditch, Canadian head of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, announced Monday that pressure on staff and residents is too much to bear. The Roman Catholic lay order will phase out the St. John’s orphanage over the next several months as new homes are found for 40 boys. **It’s been the focus of so much at- tention in the press each day that you turn on your radio, or you pick up the paper, and you see Mount Cashel prin- ted across headlines,’* Hepditch said. The announcement came after days of private meetings between the brothers and government represen- tatives, The future of the boys’ home — the only such institution the brothers run in North America — has been clouded since former residents charged earlier this year they were physically and sexually abused. Nine brothers and former brothers have been charged, including a brother who last week was accused of abuses as late as last February. The charges sparked an ongoing judicial inquiry that has heard Blackmail charges _ laid VICTORIA (CP) — A woman has been charged with trying to blackmail the man she claimed had sexually assaulted-her as a child 10 years ago. The woman, now 20, is accused of demanding money from the man in ex- change for her silence about his alleged sexual assaults on her when she was nine and 10 years old. Police only learned about the case after the man told a friend he was being blackmailed for acts that happened years before. The friend informed the Victoria police sex crimes unit. Police arrested a 45-year-old man on Oct. 3 and charged him with indecent assault of the victim between Sept. 1 1978, and May 1, 1979. “From there, he reported the crime of being blackmailed,’’ said Det. Wayne Coleman. ‘‘The woman was asking for $20,000. Coleman would not confirm if any money was exchanged. “A package was delivered,” said Coleman. The woman, who lives in suburban Saanich, appeared in Victoria provin- cial court Monday charged with con- cealing the indictable offence of in- decent assault for the purpose of gain. Both accused appeared briefly in court Tuesday. The woman was scheduled to appear again Dec. 19. The man elected trial by judge alone and a preliminary hearing was set for next Feb. 28. 2329-6th Avenue Phone 365-5818 PASTOR STUART LAURIE © 365-3278 Sunday Morning Worship 10:30 a.m Nursery & Children’s Church provided Mid-Week Service & Study Wednesdays 6:30-8:00'p.m. Bible teaching tor all ages A Non-Denominational Family Church Preaching the Word of Faith! __GRACE PRESBYTERIAN 2605 Columbia Ave. Morning Worship 11:30 a.m Church School 11:30 a.m 365-2438 CHURCH OF GOD 2404 Columbia Avenue Church School 9:45 a.m Morning Worship 11 a.m. Pastor Ira Johnson * 365-6762 ~FULLGOSPEL FELLOWSHIP (A.C.0.P.)
