The crew were practicing their skills on one of the homes being demolished to make way for the Castlegar-Robson bridge. For more photos, see page 5. City workers demand change Scott David Harrison EDITOR Castlegar’s city works crews are staging a revolt. Representatives of CUPE Local 2262 will hold a special meeting with the City of Castlegar this Friday in the hopes of resolving several outstanding disputes. The disputes sur- round everything from contracting out to the leadership of Castlegar’s Superintendent of Public Works, Barry Comin. “He's caused a lot of grief for a lot of people,” one Local 2262 member said, asking to remain unidentified for fear of retri- bution. “There have been a lot of things that have been going on that has had everybody shaking their heads.” The special meeting is at least the second being staged be- tween CUPE representatives and Castlegar. The first meet- ing saw some progress made, but not enough in the minds of CUPE Local 2262. “Things have got a lot better since that meeting, but we still have things on the table. Supposedly, everything will be resolved this Friday.” One issue involves the paving of the new parking lot behind city hall. The lot has been contracted out because workers were told they were too busy. “That's not true,” the CUPE member said. “That’s our job, we have done all the specs like we are supposed to do and yet we're not doing the work.” Comin declined comment on any internal problems, saying “every coin has two sides.” Meanwhile, Coun. Kirk Duff said he knew nothing of prob- lems between the city workers and Castlegar. In fact, Duff said he was unaware that a meeting between CUPE and Castlegar was taking place. “It’s news to me,” Duff said Tuesday. “Nothing is going on that I’m aware of.” Coun. Doreen Smecher echoed Duff’s comments, saying she knew of no internal problems. She said all grievances go through a four-step process and, as far as she knew, this hasn't happened. Castlegar city council — like most municipal councils — has a policy not to discuss labor issues outside of in-camera sessions. One CUPE official said the problems are real, whether councillors or Comin acknowledge them or not. The official, who also asked to remain anonymous, said “I don’t want to jeopardize the meeting by talking about details. “We've had ongoing problems with the City of Castlegar and we're working to get over them,” the official said. “Things are a little touchy right now, but hopefully, that will be re- solved this Friday. “Tf it doesn’t, I'll be more than happy to discuss all the de- tails with (The News) after Friday’s meeting.”
