Wednesday, November 9, 1994 REMEMBRANCE DAY Submitted by: Rev. Canon Dorothy Barker, St. David’s Church 1 do not like Remembrance Day. now here, now there, breathing spaces, maybe even I have never, even as a child, liked Day. Because Remembrance Day does what it is designed to do; it causes us to remember, It causes us to remember not only the tremendous cost of human life, the grief, the loss, the suffering of family and friends. It also causes us to remember the horrors of war, hunger and famine, homelessness, disease, rape, pillage, destruction 1 ing spaces, g ig Spaces, ‘There are those who would say that we have not learnt or grown very much as @ race between the times of the causeman’s club and the time of the nuclear bomb. I disagree. I believe that, although we have a long, long way to go to achieve peace and justice for all, we have achieved some measure of growth of compassion and of beauty, truth and goodn loss of loss of Childhood, loss of home, loss of business, loss of livelihood, isd We did learn the bitter fruits of a punishing peace after World War I. We have been horrified by the events loss of humanity. No, I do not like Day. But leading up to and culminating in World World II and ppalled by the terrible possibilities of our war toys for it is because of all these horrors that we must ber. We We can thank God for the recent setting aside must ber with p d sad and profound gratitude those whose lives were taken in defence of freedom, for the protection of their land and loved ones and for the liberation of the oppressed. We must remember with great sadness those who, century after century, have been innocent victims of conflict and war, children, women, the aged, the creatures of the earth, even the earth itself. We must remember. We must never shut our eyes or minds or hearts to the imhumanity of the acts of war. ‘We must remember and resist all temptations to become pseudo-innocents, to refuse to face the fact of evil and the potential for evil in the human race; pseudo-innocents, those who refuse to believe that all is not well, when all is riot well, like the three monkeys who see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil and by so doing pretend that evil, greed, lust for power, lust for money, inordinate pride of race, nation, culture or religion that sets itself up as superior and oppressive for others, pretend that these do not exist. We must remember and we must remember the cost. But Remembrance Day has another name. It has also been called Armistice Day: Armistice in a iP y ion of hostiliti and so it has been in, human history, a P ion of hostili The Way of fears, misunderstandings and hatreds in the Middle East as Israel, Palestine, Egypt and Jordan work for peace. We must believe that some progress is being made, that outbursts of barbaric and cruel behaviour are less and less acceptable in our day. And so we come to Remembrance with sadness and we recall Armistice with rejoicing, two sides of the same coin. Where is the word of God to be found proclaimed and heard on this Remembrance/Armistice Day? The word of God is the word of hope, the word of God is the word of love, the word of God is the word of faith, the word of hope, Christian hope is soundly and firmly ground in the promises of God — “The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God”, the word of love. God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, and the word of God is the word of faith — Gods faithfulness to us - “Behold I am with you always.” The faith, the hope and the love, though sometimes weak, sometimes faltering, bring us to believe and to pray that God’s Kingdom of peace, love and joy, will indeed come and that we shall indeed, as God promised through the prophet: “Beat our swords into ploughshares and not make war anymore.” KIMHAIRD CHURCH OF GOD Pastor John Wiuff (B.th., M.Div.) 2404 Columbia Ave. Castlegar, BC, VIN 2X5 Pastor 365-6762 Church 365-5300 Nov. 12- 6 pm: Parish Dinner & Talent Show ALL WELCOME The Rev. Chicken Little squawked in alarm and rushed off crying, ““The sky is falling, the sky is falling.” This was quickly joined in her flight by the rest of the hens, then the turkeys, the ducks and the geese, all ane across the fields crying, “The sky is falling.” As they were racing up a hill toward a nearby wood they were met by a fox who stopped them and asked what was the matter. “We are run- ning away because the sky is falling,” they all shouted. “I know just the place to hide,” announced the wily fox and led them all to his den in the side of the hill.
