What a relief to discover it was only condensation from the air conditioner. That’s about the only kind of fluid leakage that doesn’t warrant con- cern, says Car Care Canada of the Automo- tive Industries Associa- tion of Canada. Any other drip or puddles are omens of potential car trouble, even a safe- ty hazard. A common practice is to put up with a minor leak until it’s conve- nient to get it fixed, especially when you are away from home. Delaying such repairs, which often involve nothing more than tightening a hose or replacing a gasket, can be costly. The best way to find and/or prevent leaks is to keep the engine clean and check under and around the vehicle periodically for spots indicating leaks. Keep- ing gaskets, hoses and connections in good condition will prevent most of such problems from occurring. In your own drive- way it’s relatively easy to locate and identify a leak. At night you can spread paper under the suspicious spot for closer scrutiny the next morning. In a rest stop or park- ing lot, however, you first have to determine if the leakage actually has come from your vehicle. It could be from the one which previous- ly sat in that space. Check fluid levels fre- quently on a long trip, especially if there is a possibility of a leak. ¢ Green or Yellowish water near the engine is antifreeze. * Red fluid comes from the automotive transmission or the power steering (although they are not the same). ¢ An oily liquid, usual- ly without much colour but with a pungent odour, is likely to be brake fluid. A thin fluid smelling like gasoline probably is just that. Leaking oil, antifreeze or gasoline around an engine is haz- May Is Car Care Month This spring, share the road with motorcyclists For the motorcycle enthusiast, Spring means it's time to return to the open road. Jim Paterson, president of Harley-Davidson's Motorcycle Division, suggests that before motorcyclists don their helmets, both motorists and motorcyclists brush up on road safety. “Automobile drivers and motorcyclists must learn to share the road,” Paterson says. “When springtime comes and temperatures rise, drivers are not always aware of the increased numbers of motorcycles on the road.” To help make travel safer for everyone, Paterson offers these tips for motorists. ¢ Before turning or changing lanes, always do a “head-check” — cyclists to help them share the road. The SIPDE system (scan, identify, predict, decide never rely on just your _and execute) demands mirrors; * Get into the habit of expecting to see motor- cycles on the road; « Give motorcycles an entire lane; * Remember that motorcyclists handle adverse road conditions (weather, obstacles, etc.) much differently than do motorists. Give them the necessary space to slow down or avoid potential road hazards. The Motorcycle Safe- ty Foundation recom- mends a simple system that drivers and motor- cyclists constantly scan the road for potential trouble spots. Once accustomed to scanning ahead, looking for haz- ards becomes nearly automatic and safer highway sharing is the result. The SIPDE sys- tem encourages drivers and riders to make judgements and take action without hesita- tion. Officer Paul Stein of the California Highway TRAIL J AUTO BODY { Patrol says that motorists tend to treat motorcycles in the same way they treat bicycles because they appear to be the same size. “An automobile driver may look right at a motorcy- clist, but will not react eh way he would if con- fronted by another auto- mobile. Motorists need to realize that motorcy- cles require and deserve just as much space as automobiles,” he says. Motorcyclists wishing to learn “More about safe riding techniques are encouraged to contact the Motorcycle Safety Foun- dation (800-447-4700) or their local’ Harley-David- son dealership.
