Brydon Tolls of East Kootes nay Resources ‘Mr. J. Bryden, M. P. P., for North Nanaimo, and his son, Mr. J. W. Bryden, arrived. in the city this Monday.- Mr. Bryden is a member of the firm of John Duns- muir and Sons, and was formerly the manager of the Nanaimo mines, He is still a member of the firm though he has retired from active management. He and his son have just returned here from a visit to the mines af the Crow’s Nest and are enthusiastic as to the ex.ent of the veins and the number of them. “Why,” said Mr. Bryden, ‘‘there are veins there over sixty miles long and twenty feet. thick, and the height, though variable, is greater than;anything we kave on Van- couver Island. In fact, there is in the neighborhood of Fernie, enough coal to smother Vancovér Island. That is, there is more coal in that country than Vancouver Island could contain, and it is good coal. I was astonished at not only its ex- tent but its quality, and the number of veins that could be found. My son,” he continued,. ‘‘will remain here for some little time, looking over the metalliterous mines of the Rossland camp with a view ‘Of ac- quainting himself with a new order ofmining. -Ofcourse,; he has had every opportunity to learn every- thing that can be learned in a coal mine but he has never had a chance of learning the conditions of metal- bered that the Chinese could always be depended upon to obey orders so long as they were in the employ of any company, and they were there the next day after payday just as they were on the day before.” Mr. Bryden will leave for the coast on Wedrfesday but his son will remain for a few weeks. A CHESAW HOLD-UP. Former Rossland Mun Relieved of His Valuables. Greenwood, B. C., Sept. 18— Special—The Miner has issued an extra edition recounting the hold-up at Chesaw of a real estate agent named Hughes, formerly of Ross- land, , [t says that Hughes, who is now a prominent real estate dealer of Phoenix, B. C., was held up by two highwaymen on the outskirts of Chesaw. Mr, Hughes arrived at Chesaw about four’ o'clock p. m., and meeting -several ‘friends pro- ceeded in the usual western style to celebrate. The celebration was kept up in town until after twelve o'clock, when some of his friends undertook to show him ‘‘across.the creek,” As near as can be learned, he left'the rest of the crowd, and started for his hotel. When he reached the bridge he was held up by two men, who relieved him otf $45 in cash, a gold watch and chain and his hat. There is no clue to the robbers. : ‘In the extra the Miner ‘puts a quietus on the rumor that /the Co- lumbia & Western will not build to LOCALLY INTERESTING Items of a Newsy Nature Gleaned For Our Readers Today. Mr. Bry- den to the vast coal deposits in East Kootenay, emphasizes the ex- ™ Stent of the great cesources of the interior. The development of these mines and the unlimited area of coal, means not only the encour- agement of great commercial inter- ests in that section, but the .exten- sion of all manufacturers and enter- ‘prises in which coal will be used. Mr. Bryden tells us that the supply is so extensive that it would cover all of Vancouver Island, and makes a very gratifying comparison be- tween the deposits of that section and the East Kootenay coal fields. Independent of the mineral re- sources, therefore, East Kootenay has much in store for the upbuild- ing of industrial enterprises.
