This year two new agencies have joined the United Way: The Castlegar Heritage Society and the B.C. Epilepsy Society. One in three Castlegar resi- dents will use the services of a United Way agency next year. A year ago we asked our- selves, our agencies and our con- tributors (you) if we were redundant. We were assured such was not the case. As governments start to come to grips with the realities of crushing debt loads, there is, every reason to believe future government funding for social agencies will be reduced, possi- bly drastically, Greater onus will then fall upon social agencies to provide their own funding, which is how the United Way originally got Started over a hundred years ago. At this point, we are not in a position to provide any massive amounts of money. Meanwhile, the need continues for us to provide funding as we have done in Castlegar since 1946.
