:J Oct 309ir Iq 7 l EPP·JJALIC ,S This week the Retirees Curling Club of Rossland were out 55 strong to see bow the old muscles responded to curling. After a summer of swinging away at that little white ball, it's quite a change to pick up a chunk of granite and deliver it to the far end of a curling sheet. There is quite a difference, one from the other. They didn't stay out there too long but I suppose some of them will be feeling the effects during the week. I didn't even get to test out the weight of one rock because Joe Rosse and I were busy getting the names of prospects and sorting them out. Phil Bateman and Rich Watkinson, the other members of our draw crew came in after they had tried out their arms and legs, and gave us a hand to sort players into categories. The first competition is on Tuesday. We shall start with 10 rinks (five-man) ready to get our season underway. We have the same situation every fall when we start up. Some of the men will still be away on trips and won't be ready to start until later. Granted, it's pretty nice to be able to turn one's back on the ice and snow of B.C. for the likes of Arizona, California and Florida. I might even do something like that myself if I ever find myself supplied with enough of the necessary medium of exchange, maybe in a few years, or I might even win a sweepstakes, then I could think up some pleasant way to spend my winnings! Incidentally, we now have an icemaker for the curling rink. I didn't hear any squawks regarding the ice so I would imagine that be is doing his job. ' Now you can expect to be kept abreast of all the happenings in the Retirees club play and if I get the information, I'll try to do the same for the other clubs in town. Looks like it could be a very long season for all of them coming up. Now to Warrior hockey for awhile. As was expected the power of the Colts was just too much but our boys must have done a pretty fair job as the 5-3 score would indicate. They didn't fall over and play dead for the team that are almost perennial challengers for the Junior "8" crown in the provincial playdowns. Tonight Grand Forks comes to town before the Warriors go down the hill to take on the Smoke Eaters. Two teams with whom they have not had too much trouble so far in the young season. The Warriors play only one afternoon game at home according to my schedule and that is Columbia Valley on Nov. 15. Game time is 2 p.m. There are two late starts both on Fridays, Cranbrook on Dec. 4 and Grand Forks on Jan. 29, both are 8:30 p.m. starts as compaed to 8 p.m. regularly. If any changes to the schedule come up I'll try to keep you up to date with them. So, the World Series is history for another season. It was a pretty good season and I don't think too much fault could be found with the series except for a few bad calls by the men in blue. Of course everyone can see them but with TV giving you all the angles it would take a guy with really bad eyesight to miss those ones in that final game. The Twins were full value for their victory. They were able to establish a record which it may take quite a while to break again. That of winning every game in the series that was played in their own park. I guess they established themselves as a team that really played well at home during the regular season and they carried right on into the series. Good going, Twins! Now, that's a good time to say, 'til next time, then!
