And from this perspective, black men_are practically the enemy. They abandon their loved ones, they betray every sacred trust, and they retain domestic power with physical threats and violence. WORSETOCOME With the soundtrack belting out the soaring voices of a gospel choir, it’s supposed to make viewers feel that a better day is coming — yet daily news accounts of broken families, crack houses and gang wars, and even the shattering climax of the drama itself, suggest that the worst is yet to come: “The ending of the book is left to your own personal interpretation,’ Winfrey said. ‘‘We all sat around for hours arguing about whether or not you were left with a feeling of hope or a feeling of despair.” Critics who screened the program at a_preview in Los Angeles were also divided in their views Some praised the show as a rare op portunity to see a close-knit group of black women dominating a prime-time | TV drama. Others condemned it for wandering story-lines, wooden direc tion, phoney-looking sets and a dread ful performance by scandal-ridden Robin Givens. Pulpit & Pew By Rev. TED BRISTOW Castlegar United Church Recently, I was preached at by someone who never goes to church It was moving, in a way, to have this man tell me with great emotion that Jesus came to teach us to love our neighbors, and to be truly Christian that’s all we need to do, so who needs all this church business when loving your neighbor is the only thing that matters? It was a well-preached sermon. He hada fire in his eyes and a conviction in his voice. I could just see him pounding the pulpit. Actually, he was leaning on akitchen table. It was a pretty good sermon, too, as far as it went, because Jesus certainly did teach us to love our neighbor. If we don’t, we'vé left outhalfof what Jesus wasall about. But as I told him, after he finished preaching, there’s another half of Jesus’ teachings that’s equally as im- portant The way I put it was that we can’t Lottery numbers The following are the winning num- bers inWednesday’s lotteries: LOTTO 6/49—7,10,15,18, 19.and 23. The half of Jesus’ teachings people often forget is that God wants to do something for us, as well as God wan- ting us to do something for others. Salvation means healing, healing of our inner hurts and guilts and fears that make us so messed up, sometimes, we can hardly love the neighbor who lives in the same house’ with us, let alone some stranger halfway across the world The best quality comes from people who themselves feel loved.
