Watching birds can sometimes lead to catching fish, on lakes which are far inland, as well as on salt water. Charterboat skippers on the Pacific head for flocks of birds they see “working", that is, diving or showing other signs of feeding. The reason, of course, is that if birds are feeding on a school of anchovies, pilehards, her- ring or whatever, there's a good chance salmon will be working on the same school, In protected inside waters, herring balls are common, especially in winter. These are formed by sea birds which da large Wy check your leader and the last few feet of your main line for nicks or abrasions every time you have it in the boat torebait or move. A nick that may be barely visible can cut , the strength of your line in half. : Your lips are highly sensitive. Run your line gently through your lips. If you detect any roughness, change the leader or cut off that section of your main line. Watch your line as it pays off your reel. If the first part is a lighter color than that farther down on the spool, throw away the school of herring and feed on its edges. They force the herring into a smaller and smaller space until they become the “ball”. Salmon often come up from beneath to feed on all that bait. If you cruise into one of these areas, you might hook a salmon. You might also hook a rhinoceros auklet, one of the birds which do the underwater cowboy fish her- ding act, Taking one of these light lored part, or get all new line. That lighter color means the line has been weakened by exposure to the sun, That weakened part will break easily, especially at the knots. / Your Stars By Stella Wilder It is important over the next few days not to confuse aggression and initiative.
