CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, January 11, 1979 FURNISHINGS for a four-bed ward In the new extended care unit planned for the © Castlegar and District Hospital has been made possible by longtime Castlegar resi- dent Fred Parent who on Friday presented a $3,000 cheque to hospital administrator Ken Talarico. Earlier, as shown in the above photo, another $3,000 cheque w presented by Parent, left, to D. R. Nuyer the board of Columbia View Lodge to be used toward the purchase of a wheelchalr van for. A9: “Live’by Laws of Land") requires an immediate response. There are still many people in the West Kootenays (as, indeed, in the whole province) who take as superficial a view of the case of the Doukhobors, Mr. Maynard lists a num- ber of “terrorists' actions”, — “blowing things to kingdom come — power lines, railway lines, burning schools, jails...” — as if they were a matter of general Doukhobor doctrine, or the actions of all Doukhobors, rather than those of a very few individuals, No different from the hoary old bigotry of com- plaining, as a justification for every kind of prejudice, that “the Jews killed:Christ.” This is, of course, an easy smear to make, Mr. Maynard also, ressur- rects the phrase “Doukhobor tunnels.”* One Man’‘s Opinion Social Facts of Life An item issuing from a recent meeting of the school board awakens my interest. *,.. every second window to be boarded up... . School corridors will look tike mine The item was raised as a result of the $6,000 vandalism bill for October, 1978, and, | think, the action to be taken Is a complete over-reaction to a current fact of life. Halloween or not, some of the members-of our community feel it Is good fun to break school windows. In my opinion, presenting school buildings which look tike a local Insurrection has taken place is not the approach to take. It will be necessary to simply repair the damage as systematically as it may occur. If the members of our local school board cannot understand the twisted sense of humor of the window-breakers, then | doubt they will ever know why those same without for a mo- ment bothering to identify them, and goes on to describe them as “problems that they themselves brought to Canada some 70 to 80 years ago.” , Well now! I'd imagine that there are very few problems in Canada — including those ex- perienced by Indians and Es- kimos — that were not. im- ported by these or those white folks — English, French, Rus- sian, you name it. We all bring or inherit our viewpoints, and it makes no difference whether the “prob- lems” are inherited of originate on the spot, They still remain to, be resolved, When you consider further that some of the “problems” of all Doukhobors — inapprop- riate schooling, ignorant law- making, govern: mission of Doukhobor affairs. For several years now,, the. USCC has requested at least“ the Fevival of the Doukhobor While tically to accept that, yiewpolrit,: (Canada will have begun to be a ‘real country, TH then, it is the task of all of us witHout * ion to work toward a there may - some plausible ion to the ment action, community bigot- ry and attempted extortion, unjustified loss of franchise — were created by “other people,” in Mr. Maynard’s term, no-one can shirk his or her respon- sibility to work for solutions. Having made such points at Mr. Maynard's expense, let me soften them a shade by coming to his defense. How large a part does the ethnic background of this country play at present in our school curri- culum? Till recently, what has the attitude of the press been to the status and problems of minority groups? Even yet, what is the attitude of the provincial gov- ernment? If Mr. Maynard has not dug out all the available facts, just how much encour- agement has he and others like him had? Precious little. Although I disagree most. strongly with his views, I thank him for.the concern and energy put into stating them, because without, an understanding of such views there is no place from which to begin the work of social reconstruction. i In 1913 William Blakemore recommended the establish- ment of a provincially-appoint- ed Doukhobor agent. In 1952 the Hawthorne research com-- mittee recommended the estab- lishment of a provincial com- of an agency to deal with just one ethnic group, there is a ready, extant solution in aid of this and other difficulties, Several provinces (as well as the federal government) have ministers responsible for multicultural affairs, notably Alberta, Ontario, but also sup- posedly “smaller” provinces such as Saskatchewan, With its progressive aims, its numerous minorities, and its less-than- perfect moral history, it-is past time that a ministry of multi- culturalism was set up in British Columbia, Such an agency could legi- timately involve itself with not only the conflicts experienced by Doukhobors and their neigh- bors, but with the other prob- lems that arise from time to time between members of dif- ferent minorities, Perhaps it is most impor- tant to recognize that all of us in Canada, whether of English, French, Native, Russian, Ti- betan, or whatever extraction, are members of our own minority group. Just as each of us values — with good reason — his or her heritage, so we must remember that there are éle- ments both sad and glorious in the‘heritage of every one of our neighbors, When we are prepared personally, socially, and poli- broader understanding of our various roots, branches and “fruits. Or, more hopefully, the anti-social types will become greedy for more of the same. (t will then behoove the elected trustees to discover realistic alternatives like school security patrols or serious money rewards for the control of the problem. But those alternatives will only be considered when the cost Is less than the existing It cannot be an easy problem to solve and | do not envy the trustees as they come to grips with a social fact of life; but 1, for one, think that vandalism is not a public problem. Bearing the cost does belong to the trustees and this responsibility passes to the taxpayers. Little can be done about the light bill for the time being. It could be that littie can be done about the vandalism cost each month. | would conclude by saying that | do not think that acts of vandalism should be reported in: the local media because, in my opinton, that simply encourages the perpetrators to do more of the same for the public attention they get. Campaign Still Short of Target Christmas may be over for most of us, but the Christmas Seal Campaign — source of funding for education and re- search into lung diseases — continues during January. Reporting from Vancouver, ~ Tan Maxwell-Smith, honorary treasurer of the British Colum- bia Lung Association, said that campaign donations to Dec. 31 had reached the-$640,000 mark. However, with a target of $700,000 for this i vention and cure of, lung di- seases which afflict at least 25 per cent of the population will take high priority, and health education programs will con- tinue actively. Campaign goal for the Castlegar area is $4,000 of which $3,319 has been raised at the Dec. 31st count. Any en- quiries about the campaign in this area may be directed to the campaign chairman Mrs. Dawna Dinning. there is still some way to go, he said. Christmas Seals were mail- ed to every home in Britis Columbia during November and December, but if, with all the festivities, you perhaps over- looked sending in your donation for this year, please do so now, he said. The Christmas Seal office is continuing to process donations throughout the month of January. Campaign targets are set for communities throughout the province based on previous donations and the overall fund- ing goals of the association, said Maxwell-Smith., As in previous years, research into the pre- Maureen’s Electrolysis Studio “Permanent Hair Removal” At the Castlegar HAIR ANNEX 7PineSt. Ph. 365-3009 Government and Medically Approved Phone for FREE CONSULTATION “Deluxe “Room For Two For One Night Regular $37.00 Sunpay Expiran,May 31, 1979 Children with Parents: NIC Present this coupon upon arrival.
