Moore mum on WKPL
meeting in Castlegar

Mayor Audrey Moore of Castlegar
said it is up to Castlegar council
whether the city makes a presentation
at a Nov. 5 public hearing in Nelson

It’s not often that a world record holder stops for a
bite to eat in Castlegar.

But John Hathaway of Vancouver pedalled into town
Thursday and stopped for a quick lunch at the Homestead
Soup and Sandwich Shoppe.

“Sometimes the ministry will

have sometimes opposed a sub-

And that has led to the current

But as if that isn't enough, Hathaway also plans to
log a total of 200,000 metres of uphill riding through 69
countries on six continents.

His route will take him through the Rocky
Mountains, the Andes in South America, the Alps and
Pyrenees in Europe and the Himalayas, among other
lesser mountain ranges.

Why does a 61-year-old man take off on a journey
that would daunt even the fittest man or woman half his
age?

“T've always enjoyed doing this. It fills a void because
I'm not working,” said Hathaway, a draftsman by
profession who recently was laid off by the company for
which he was working.

He said he rides purely for his own interest and
physical fitness and not for moos? causes or donations of
any kind.

However, he said he woulda’ 't refuse a sponsorship if
one were to come his way.

Hathaway began marathon riding 31 years ago with
a 12,800-kilometre Vancouver-New Orleans-Montreal trip
in 1955. That journey took him 88 days.

Other exploits of the former British bike racer
include a 1971 Dawson Creek to Vancouver ride (1,220
kilometres) which took him 69 hours, and most recently
the Paris-Brest-Paris world marathon event where he
completed the 1,200-kilometre ride in 71 hours 55
minutes.

executive by three directors
and to change to meetings
every two months instead of
the current quarterly
meetings.

But the board voted down
a motion to adopt a formal
committee structure to help
expedite its business

The changes came at the
suggestion of director Ean
Gower, a Nelson alderman
who said he is concerned
about the continuity of the
board's business.

Gower said a larger execu
tive and more frequent meet
ings would provide better
continuity between meet
ings.

four-member executive con
sisting of the chairman, vice

Castlegar school district administration decided
Friday to change the starting time of Castlegar Primary
school back to 8:30 a.m. from 8 a.m. after receiving
complaints from several parents that bus schedules were
making their children late for school

“Schools opening at eight caused a lot of difficulty at
the ‘primary level,” superintendent of schools Terry
Wayling said.

Starting time at Kinnaird elementary will also be
modified slightly but Twin Rivers elementary will keep
its 8 a.m. start of classes, he said.

Wayling said the changes were necessary mainly
because of bus scheduling difficulties. At Kinnaird
elementary, the changes resulted from complaints by
Blueberry Creek parents of an overcrowded bus.

elementary this year and students from that school are
now bused to Kinnaird elementary

Wayling said the new schedule will allow a bus to
pick up Blueberry Creek students at about 8:10 a.m. and
drop them off at Kinnaird elementary at about 8:20 a.m.

He said the starting time at Twin Rivers elementary
will stay at 8 a.m. because there are “no major difficulties
there,” except that students must get up earlier for
school

At Castlegar Primary, the move back to an 8:30 a.m
staring time will “accommodate the youngsters who were
arriving late,” Wayling said. 5

All schedule changes will take effect Tuesday in
order to give the district staff time to notify parents,
Wayling said

He added that the district will try the new schedules
for about a week

“If we hear of major concerrts we'll certainly look at
them,” he said

TORONTO (CP) — There are growing doubts
among Canadians about the competence and leader-
ship of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and his
government, as well as his honesty and integrity and
that of his cabinet ministers, suggests a poll conducted
for the Toronto Star.

This is eroding public support for Mulroney and
his Tory government to the point that the Liberal
party now holds a lead of 12 percentage points among
decided voters across the country, indicates the poll
by Goldfarb Consultants of Toronto.

If an election were held now, 42 per cent of

\ decided voters would favor the Liberals, 30 per cent

the Conservatives and 28 the NDP, the poll says.
Twenty-three per cent of respondents were un-

OTTAWA (CP)—Canadians who owe Revenue
Canada tax payments will be getting a break Oct. 1
when the government lowers its interest rate on
overdue taxes to nine per cent, from 10 per cent.

Those who are owed money, however, will also be
getting the lower interest rate on their tax refunds.

If you owe the government money, but you didn't
file your return until September, the interest will be
calculated from the April 30 deadline.

If the government owes you money, the interest
will be calculated from the date the department
receives your return

Canadian sentenced

HOUSTON (AP) — A Canadian has been sen
tenced to 100 years in prison and fined $350,000 US
after being convicted of trying to smuggle marijuana
and cocaine into Houston.

“Harris County, Texas, is not an easy mark,”
State District Judge Ted Poe told Robert Briggs, 30,
of Winnipeg.

Prosecutors said Briggs arrived at Houston's
Hobby Airport on May 3 in a twin-engined plane
loaded with marijuana and cocaine

He was sentenced to 60 years and fined $250,000
for smuggling 12.3 kilograms of cocaine, and received
40 years and a $100,000 fine for possessing 230 kilo-
grams of marijuana:

secutively. He also said that because Briggs cannot
pay the fine, he must serve one additional day for
every $25 of the fine — more than 38 additional years

KARACHI (CP) — The four gunmen aboard the
hijacked Pan Am jet at Karachi airport blasted away at their
hostages for 15 minutes before Pakistani commandos
stormed the plane. Karachi’s civil aviation chief said
Saturday.

It was a sharp reversal of previous statements by the
official, Air Marshall Khurshid Anwer Mirza. On Friday
night, Mirza said the commando assault was planned in
advance and began before the hijackers started shooting the
hostages.

But Saturday he said, “I am absolutely certain that no
one boarded that plane for 15 minutes after they started the

Controversy over Pakistan's handling of the hijacking

Appledale where she lived
until her husband passed

Mrs. Chernoff then moved

She is survived by one son,
