Ballard, 84-year-old owner of the NHL Norris Division team, fingered the 15-year defender as the ring leader of a group of players ejected from the team's Bloomington, Minn. hotel early Thursday morning following a noisy party in one of the rooms. Salming returned home as did Ballard while the rest of the Leafs including at least three other players who were evicted from the hotel by police along with Salming — played in Detroit on Friday. At the time, Ballard said Salming was considered the role model for the younger players and should be held responsible for their conduct. However, in a statement released Saturday prior to the return engagment at Maple Leaf Gardens with Detroit, Ballard said a thorough investigation of the incident showed management had wronged Salming by putting the blame on him. “I feel the situation has been blown out of proportion and I am disturbed that Borje Salming has suffered because of the adverse publicity,” Ballard:said. He added: “The whole situation Was brought on by my haste in deciding to send Borje home, never realizing the outcry that would result. “As the facts filtered through , the circumstances became very much different from what I was originally led to believe. “I am sorry that this has caused Borje and his family personal grief and I hope that we can put this entire situation behind us.” He said the players had gone out together following the game at Minnesota and ordered food in after returning to the hotel. He said the players engaged in a basketball game using a soft ball while waiting for the food. He said players apparently ignored a warning from hotel security and police were called. Ballard’s statement was released about two hours after Salming made his first public statment about the hotel incident that followed a 4-3 loss Wednesday night to the Minnesota North Stars. Leaf public-relations director Bob Stellick said Salming and general manager Berry McNamara met following the team's return and the 36-year-old defenceman decided not to dress for the Saturday night game at the Gardens. Salming, along with teammates Gary Leeman, Al Iafrate and Chris Kotsopolous, spent the rest of Thursday night-Friday morning in-another hotel after being ejected.
