It was easy — except maybe for the television interview, The SHSS Grade 10 student kept the school’s streak alive by winning the third straight women’s weightlifting gold medal at the B.C. Winter Games in Duncan last weekend. And, as the only girl in the event, became something of a celebrity as BCTV picked up on her story. Her teammate, Grade 9 student Jeff Lewkowich, was also in the medals, winning a bronze. Another SHSS lifter, Carlo Masini, just missed the medals, finishing fifth. It-was the first time the three had competed at the Games and for Hitchens, it was a gold medal on a silver platter — her com- petition failed to show. “They said that two other girls were supposed to. be there with me, but they didn’t show up,” said Hitchens, who won the gold by default. Hitchens said she would have preferred it if the other girls had come. “Yeah, it would have put Pressure on me and then I would have done better.”” As it was, Hitchens said she “*screwed up one lift that sent my total back, but I did OK." Hitchens said the BCTV thing was a little embarrassing but ad- mitted she taped it anyway so she can relive the moment. Team coach Grant Lenarduzzi said Masini could have easily been in the medals, but ‘‘ran into some trouble” during the event. “He's lifted better here (at SHSS). He didn’t lift what he could have lifted, maybe it’ was Now we just have to keep the in- terest. up because it’s the second year when you usually see im- Provement.’’ Lenarduzzi doesn’t have to worry about Hitchens coming back to the sport. “I liked it before, but I really like it now, and I’m going to go back again and again,’’ she said, BASKETBALL Last «eeknd might well become known as the West Kootenay wipeout for two Stanley Humphries basketball teams. High expectations went down the tubes Saturday as the favored junior girls lost to Trail in the West Kootenay championship while the senior boys didn’t even get that far, losing to Grand Forks in the semifinal game. That leaves only the senior girls, ranked fifth in the province in AA, with a chance to advance to the provincial championship when they host the West Kootenay finals March 2. Girls coach Colette Pilloud said the 32-29 loss to J.L. Crowe on its home court in Trail was as disheartening as they come. “It’s a shame really. After not losing a game in this area the whole season — and losing very little outside this area — then to lose the one that counts. I was really disappointed,’’ said Pilloud, whose rookie season with the junior girls came to an end with the loss. The junior girls had not lostto Trail in a half-dozen meetings during the regular season. Pilloud said her girls didn’t have the right attitude going into the game and it showed. “This year’s Grade 10s just didn’t have the attitude 1 would have liked tn basketball players. They seemed too casual for me. They just wanted it all to be over and that’s the way they played the game, like it meant nothing.’* Pilloud said Amy Polonicoff and Wendy Closkey were notable absences on the court. “Polonicoff went 0-19 and Wendy was 2-19, those are stats that can turn a game right there,”’ she said. On a positive note, forward Jan Holden gave Pilloud hope for the future as the Grade 9 student played as consistently as ever against Trail even though the roof was falling in. “‘She’s going to be one of our upcoming ball players,’ said Pilloud. The senior boys were out after their first game in a 69-64 loss to Grand Forks in the four-team final played at L.V. Rogers high school in Nelson. Grand Forks then got beat 132-71 by Nelson in the final. SHSS was led, as usual, by West Kootenay all-star Wade Forrester, who scored 21. Coach John Ritchie’s ex- Planation was simple: ‘They scored too many points against us for us to win.” It sounds obvious but there’s logic to what Ritchie says. “If a team scores more than 60 points on us then we're in trouble, because we’re not a high scoring outfit.’” But Ritchie said if you're going to point a finger at anybody it has to be him. “A four point loss is a coaching loss. When you lose by that much the coach should have, or could have, done something.”’ Considering this was the revival year for senior basketball at SHSS — there was no team last year — Ritchie said it was a successful season and a learning experience. “If it had been @ real dump this year that would have been tough to take, but we were one game over .500 on the season and next year we'll be a little bit bet- ter.” As for the senior girls, coach Jack Closkey said\he’ll -be keeping them focused through the week’ heading into the West Kootenay playoffs to avoid the same fate the juniors suffered, Being focused is especially im- portant after his girls played poorly in the second half of a home-and-home exhibition series against Cranbrook on Saturday, Closkey said. The girls lost 66-42 to Cran- brook — a provincially ranked AAA team — in Cranbrook and “‘we played badly,’’ said Closkey. “We have to refocus and we'll be working on it all week,’* he said. Castlegar Realty finds itself in a familiar position heading into tonight’s opening game of the Trail Men's Basketball League playoffs. Like last year, Castlegar handily won the league title with a record of 10-2. And, like last year, Castlegar has to be considered favorites to win the whole shebang. Here’s where the cheap tents come in. Because last year, the local team folded up like tne proverbial bargain basement shelters in the rain as Trail’s Smelter Pub went on to win. This year, says Realty’s Brian Turlock, things are going to be dif- ferent. For starters, Castlegar is, unlike last year, ready for the playoffs this time around, said Turlock. “*We had a lot of injuries last year, so we were really low on bodies during the playoffs,’’ he said. ‘‘This year, we've got a full crew, everybody’s health y, so we should be OK."” A DRUG MART.
