But the greatest show on television, circus-style, is un- questionably Cirque du Soleil. Sunday night, Oct. 18, on CBC, this fabulous Quebec troupe can be seen in “Nou- velle Experience,” a special co-produced by CBC, Societe Cirque du Soleil dancers Radio Canada and Home Box Office that garnered an Emmy nod last month. Part aoe part theatre, part dance, part acrobatic show, it opens "with four amazing dan- eS who are more supple than cats. There’s also a balancing act in which a man teeters on a stack of chairs while spinning a cake ablaze with candles, artist who per- er que characters, dramat- ic lighting and delightful whimsy. The big top was never like this. e On Thursday, Oct. 22, CBC continues with Part IV of “The National Dream,” which it res- cued from the vaults with three episodes last week. The popular 1974 series on the building of the Canadian Pa- cific Railway continues on Thursdays through Nov. 20. e CTV continues with the World Series with Game 2 at the park of the National League champions on Sunday night. Monday is a travel day, with play resuming Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Oct. 20 and 21, at the American League ball park for Games 3 and 4. Game 5, if necessary, is Thursday night, Oct. 22. e NBC continues to battle baseball with romantic mini- series. Last week, it threw a curve at the competition with Jackie Collins’ “Lady Boss.” This Sunday and Tuesday, Oct. 18 and 20, it sends Danielle Steel’s “Jewels” to the plate. The miniseries also airs on some Canadian stations. (Check local listings.) The World War II saga stars Annette O’Toole as an Ameri- can who marries into British royalty when she gets swept off her feet by William, Duke of Whitfield (Anthony An- drews), and goes into the jew- elry busi after the war. “Jewels” is no jewel; it’s a for- mula-driven story typical of the Steel style. Big success still hasn’t spoiled ‘The Simpsons’ BY BOB REMINGTON Ww" apologies to “The Ren & Stimpy Show,” TV’s best animated series is back on the air, as fresh and funny as ever. Emmy Awards, merchan- dising and guest-voices by the likes of Michael Jackson and Danny DeVito haven’t spoiled the timeless, ageless Simp- sons, who are still as dysfunc- tional as before and living in off to a fine start with a Sep- tember episode titled “Kamp Krusty.” In it, Bart and Lisa left for a summer camp sup- posedly run by their kiddie-TV hero, Krusty the Clown. On their arrival, they discovered that the camp was run by a ty- rant named Mr. Black (former president of Euro-Krustyland) and a trio of goon-squad coun- selors named Dolph, Jimbo and Kearney. Instead of enjoy- ing a happy, carefree summer, the kids found themselves at a boot camp and Dickensian sweatshop rolled into one. It was Bart, of course, who led the revolt against the thugs running the joint. As usual, kids are empowered on “The Simpsons,” with adults as the antagonists. Better still was the follow- up episode, “A Streetcar Named Marge,” in which Marge won the lead role of Blanche DuBois in a local pro- duction of “Oh, Streetcar!,” tacky bliss in their bungalow in suburban Springfield. Dimwitted Homer? He’s still working at the lear musical version of “A Street- d Desire.” “Oh, Streetcar!” was a hoot, with the cast bursting into in- appropriate songs at inappro- piate and Marge fly- power plant. Maggie? Still not talking, she’s sucking away on her rubber pacifier, content as ever. Lisa is her overachieving self, Bart is the hellion he has always been, and Marge is coping with it all by baking jel- lybean muffins and going through one midlife crisis af- ter another. “The Simpsons” (airing on Canadian independent sta- tions; check local listings) got ing around the stage like Tinkerbell in a scene that was supposed to symbolize Blanche’s descent into insanity at the hands of the abusive Stanley Kowalski, played by WITHA CLASSIFIED AD!
