‘Winning a hero welcome By LINDA DROUIN QUEBEC (CP) — Marie-Andree Leclerc received = hero's welcome when she réturned home in July after spending seven years in India fighting charges that she and her ex-lover robbed and murdered a dozen tourists in their travels across Asia: Although she had been condemned to life imprison- ment by an Indian court’ for the murder of an Israeli tourist, she was allowed to return to Canada for one year to receive advanced treatment for ovarian cancer. Hundreds of admirers cheered the 88-year-old former medical secretary when she arrived at the Quebec airport. The ti a. bizarre, Telephone 365-5210 Brian L. Brown Certified General tortuous story of with the French-born Vietnamese Charles Sobhraj. Fe Leclere’s conviction was overturned recently by an Indian appeal court, and her lawyer now is asking that her obligation to return to India next year be cancelled. Her story has all the fora book ahoes fh : bia Ave. ‘astlegar Ph. 365-2151 that would answer the questions of those who followed in the media, out of curiosity or sympathy, her voyage into notoriety. This year, her book hit the stands but it leaves many questions unanswered. Throughout her ordeal, Leclerc maintained she was an innocent dupe of Sobhraj, a handsome, self-styled diamond dealer who dispensed drugs freely and was said to have magnetic charm. DIDN'T SUCCUMB. In her book (My Return); Lecleré disputes the notion that she had succumbed to that fatal charm and returned to Thailand after Sobhraj inundated her with love aie) after their first meeting in India in 1975. In fact, says Leclerc, she rejoined Sobhraj in Bangkok several months after their first meeting and a brief return to Quebec, because she had fallen in love with a married man whose “marriage she didn't want. to destroy. ORs When she first met Sobhraj, he “was a-man who was a pleasure to be with,” she writed. “Discussions with him were faseinating, He had something to say on every topic and gave the impression of knowing everything.” She says it,took her very little time to discover that beneath the: charm there was a man. “He was impossible. If he saw a crease in his pants, he would furiously throw them in his closet and curse me.” ihe : Leclere says she was never in love with Sobhraj but became his “prisoner” after he ‘falsified a visa in her passport, making it impossible for her to use the passport. He then supplied her with false passports for their voyages through Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Turkey, Iraq and India. LEFT IN HOTEL ROOMS During their travels, Sobhraj would leave her in hotel rooms while “he disappeared for long periods. She says she learned police were searching for her and Sobhraj after she read-in a magazine they were wanted for drugging and murdering tourists in several countries. Leclere’s recounting of the 10 months she spent with |. ° Sobhraj before her arrest in July, 1976, takes up a mere 22 pages of the 200-page book. The rest is, devoted to letters she wrote to friends and family during her incarceration and a series of photographs of the prison cell and prison yard where she spent years waiting for her trial and eventual conviction last, year. ‘She recounts how. she was able to: push away the despair that gripped her through a deep religious faith and by befriending and helping those in prison who were. less fortunate. Leclerc was released on bail in 1982 while she waited for the results of her.appeal and was granted to return to Canada after the discovery that she had cancer. She promises in the introduction to her book that if she defeats the cancer she is fighting; she will write a more story of her, one Auther studies father figure. role TORONTO (CP) — The re- mote man who sat at the * head of the table — otherwise known as Dad — had been difficult to overcome, Ander- sen said. " For. instance, a father teases his little girl by calling given short shrift by every- one, including his family, psyehologists and even him- self, says an author who has written a book on fathers, Christopher Andersen, au- thor of Father: The Figure and the Force, says he wrote the book to help explain why children see their fathers as resident aliens, and-why it is important ‘to change their image and role. Andersen's book is not a scholarly work but it offers a look at what fathers have and have riot done and what the so-called New Father is doing now. In Toronto on a promotion- al tour, the People magazine editor said Nancy Friday's book, My Mother — Myself, inspired him to write about fathers because her book was lopsided:in its treatment of parental ‘influence. QUESTIONS TIRING There are plenty of cele- brity anecdotes in the book and he found that they, pol- iticeans and _ executives, all were tired of being: asked about their mothers, when they felt their lives were more influenced by their fathers. For example, | Margaret Trudeau refers to her father as the “towering presence.” The “legacy of fear” clouds the father-child relationship © into adulthood and can be + her Chubby. The ‘little girl becomes an anorexic woman and a perfectionist. ~ But Dad can be as much a victim of his ‘role as is his him so he becomes isolated, embittered, unakle to. ex- press himself or feel his )fam-, ily’s support. Changing the relationship between father and child can be difficult but it is worth while for both parties to try, Andersen said.
