Besides that, “while hypno- + sis tries to pretend that iti is not with Jesus, Who admonishes His of what some followers to set their minds on spiritual and heavenly things pertaining to becoming Christ- like and preparing for the kingdom of Heaven. Every person in the family needs some place to thei- selves; an area’in a specific room or away from the rush and recreation of the piano, TV and family room. For Mom, it could be a small corner of the kitchen where she can relax with a cup of coffee, make the grocery list, plan menus and write letters. If it can be incorporated with a telephone, all the better. A study area need not be large; all that's really required is a smooth writing surface, a good straight-backed chair and proper lighting. Students usually have a desk in a corner of their’ room, but when there isn't even space for that, consider making a portion of a closet into a study centre, With bi-fold doors that open to expose a maximum area, the clutter left behind after studying can simply be out of sight behind closed doors, Filing cabinets — whether the cardboard type or the heavy steel ones—make excel- lent desks when a board is placed over two of them. Storage with a desk is essential for all the papers, pencils, rulers, stationery etc. and if there isn't enough drawer space, try to incorporate shelv- ing on the wall above the desk. A young woman can make double use of a desk vanity, especially one that’s equipped with good complexion lighting and a mirror. (Whether or not this would induce her to study more has never been proven!) Home offices, where books are kept for companies or household bills are paid, need more organizing and space. If a whole room can be devoted toa study area it is advisable to do so, When important records or those that are confidential are kept, it is also advisable to keep a lock on the door, | - Lining a wall with books and storage is the best way to insulate against noise from other rooms and gives imme- diate reference to the user. Lighting i is all-essential for If delicate specialized hobbies, the little intensive lights are in- adequate for good relaxed studying light. The best light is an in- candescent lamp sitting on the left side for a right-handed person and on the right side for a left-handed person, Typewriters, telephones and desk accessories are not only functional, but can be decorative, as well. A favorite old mug can make an excellent pencil holder and a litt!e-used ash tray can hold paper clips and erasers. In a studio apartment, sometimes the dining room table must also function as a desk. A castored file cabinet under one end of the table can hold all the papers out of the way and be moved to another room when entertaining, A smooth writing surface is important and, rather than going through the hassel of re- finishing a desk top, simply invest in a good piece of bevell- edged glass, This also {s a good way of keeping cards, charts and other important informa- tion handy by placing it under the glass, If the surface of the desk is new, this is also a good way to preserve it from paint spills, glue spots or scratches made from the base of some type: writers. Ifa study area is becoming a necessity in your home, look around for a small area, mini- mum of 24 inches wide, or a little room that can be made into that retreat where the necessary work can be done in quiet and apart from the rest of the house. TED BRISTOW This Saturday many of us will be: in and see more and more clearly what women of the allied forces who gave their lives in time of war. Today, I'd like to share with you some excerpts from a remarkable little book *con- taining: letters from German nien and women who were con- demned to death by the Nazi regime. Many of the letters were their last words sent to family‘and friends. How would you feel if-you knew you would shortly die? Many of these letters describe a surprising’ calm. “My -state -of- mind--has. remained constant, serene, and firm," writes one. Another: “My life is coming to an end, and my soul feels so light, so beautiful." Another: “I am not old, I should not be dying, yet it seems so natural to me, so simple..." The: eeet felt by the condemned speak of the pain they bring to their family. “The most terrible thing for me is the thought of your sorrow” is a typical comment. oy last messages often contain thanks to their family and friends: “I thank you for all the good you have bestowed on me.” Another: “Blessings on you for the love you have given me.” : e, one of the most interesting things in these letters is the way their ap- proaching death makes them recognize what was truly im- 7 their life. ! Writes one for many: “Now’ that no worldly concerns or cares distract my gaze from the inward and upward direction, I consists of. It con-" sists of the love of God and man, of unselfishness, kindness, friendliness . . . I should like to have a great many people hear and understand that happiness lies within one and not in outward things — solely in living union with God.” Their attitude to death is quite startling, when you rea- lize they clearly recognized it was soon to take them. “There is no death — that I am absolutely sure of.” Another: “Alter a short period of trial we shall be reunited with our loved ones in the Glory of Ged." The name of the book is Dying We Live. The letters are written by farmers, professors, students, military officers, priests, a eross section of the anti-Nazi movement in Germany, T always find myself pick- ing it up and rereading some of it as Remembrance Day ap- proaches, She was sentenced to 14 days in jail to be served inter- mittently on one charge, a similar sentence for the second charge which is to run con- currently and 21 days‘in jail to be served intermittently on the third charge. .
