Sponsored by Air Canada and Canadian MPs, they re- ceived visitors here to Castle- gar and were then able to fly to Quebec to visit their newly made friends. When it came time for the French students to return home, there were no sad good- byes, only “I’ll see you in a week”. As that week rolled by it came time for the _ nine Voyageurs to climb aboard the first of many airplanes and take off to Quebec. After 24 hours — which in- cluded long flights, sleeps on airport chairs and floors, rides on moving sidewalks and pay- ing for expensive airport food — the group touched down in Val D’Or. After a formal kissing of the ground upon deboarding the plane, the Castlegar na- tives were greeted by their new friends, just waiting to show them their fabulous city. The weather was cold but bearable and the next nine days were filled with activi- ties. Hockey games, mines, bowling, skating, French co- medians, poutine (fries and sauce), getting lost in Val D’Or, learning the language Visting the Malartic Regional Mines Museum are Castlegar’s (back row, left to right) Mike Lane, Simon Laurie, Ralph Terpin, Tammy Giles, Melanie Strelive, Chris Forster, (kneeling, left to right) Rhonda Dawes, Jade Cropley and Jan Holden. and really getting to know your host family. Jade Cropley describes her host as “my new best friend. “You really feel like that while you are there. The hos- pitality is overwhelming and you feel like you never left home.” The language differences were sometimes a problem but were easily overcome with a little patience and a handy French-English dictionary. The people of this mining community were very warm and generous, and really made the group feel very com- fortable about being there. Simon Laurie described the trip as “a tremendous cul- tural experience. “You.can learn about a cul- ture in school and by reading books, but the real learning comes from actually being a part of that culture.” The French culture in Canada has such an impact that it can not and should not be overlooked. It is really worthwhile getting to know your country and exchanges like these are excellent learn- ing experiences. Just ask any one of the voyageurs that took part in this exchange and they will tell you. “23 served with a generous portion of homemade fries. All Our Prices include the G.S.T.
