NEW METHOD .. . Ministry of Forests takes part in new reforestation method in Nancy Greene Lake area. Method involves seeding forest tree seeds b hand and protecting them with three-inch hig/ plastic cones. "SHELTERCONE’ HELPS TREE SEEDS GROW By CHERYL CALDERBANK Staff Writer Local Ministry of Forests officials are trying out a new method of reforestation — sheltercone direct seeding — in the Nancy Greene Lake area. The method involves seeding forest tree seeds by hand and placing a three-inch high plastic cone over the top of the seed to shelter it. Tom Johnston, silviculture resource officer for the Ministry of Forests in Arrow Forest District, says the purpose of the planting is to determine the effectiveness of seeding, and gain experience in this reforestation method. Seeding took place this week on a one-hectare area in the vicinity of Nancy Greene Lake. The areas were clear cut in 1980 and 1981 and followed by site preparation by piling logging slash and burning the piles. The new method consists of sowing several seeds on a small patch of mineral soil, placing a biodegradable plastic cone over the seeds and placing soil around the base of the cone to anchor it. Johnston said the cone protects the seeds from birds, rodents and excessive sunlight. “It also acts as a miniature greenhouse by keeping humidity high around the germinating seeds and moder- ating extremes of hot and cold weather,” he said. ‘Two species of tree seeds were used in the planting — Douglas fir and Western larch. Before sowing, the seeds were stratified in cold storage for about four weeks. Moistened seeds are stored in a refrigerator to simulate the natural winter dormancy period which is necessary to trigger release of growth hormones inside the seed. Germination can then occur. The seeds must be handled carefully after this process as they are very fragile, Johnston added. Johnston said another activity which occurs prior to seeding is taking a sample of the rodent population. Fifty mouse traps were set in the area for three consecutive nights. The number of rodents trapped indicates the size of the population and the likelihood of seed loss to rodents. The sheltercone direct seeding is being carried out as a trial before any large scale operations are conducted. Johnston said the method is relatively new and may be an effective, cost-saving way to regenerate new forests. The cost of seeding is comparable to planting, but with the sheltercone method, costs of nursery facilities and staff, are virtually eliminated. “It is especially promising since recent demand for seedlings has well surpassed the supply as new forest licence holders in the Arrow District try to meet their reforestation obligations,” he said. Johnston added that requests for seedlings amoun- ted to about four million last year in this district, but supply was limited to 1.6 milion. He noted that careful monitoring of this project will be required for several years to determine its success and usefulness. Johnston said the sheltercone method has been tried in other areas of the province, including a trail period in | Grand Forks and Cranbrook, where it was done ona large scale. And foresters have had their share of successes and failures with the project. Failures result from not anchoring cones or seeds being taken by rodents. “It's failed in areas where there's a lot of vegetation on the soil and the seeds are too sheltered and rot,” said Johnston. “It’s successful where the technique has been refined and the site is well-prepared to receive seeds.” He said the sheltercone seeding may be useful in sites where it is difficult to plant because of lots or rock and little soil. The cones are produced in Finland and are made of a plastic material which breaks down under the sun's ultraviolet rays. The cones will be monitored on a regular basis by forestry officials and the project is supervised by Peter | Berukoff, silviculture resource assistant.
