A banquet and dance for 80
friends and neighbors was
held Aug. 22 at The Fireside
Motor Inn to honor Pete and
Emma Pellegrin on the oc
casion of their 50th wedding
anniversary.

The event was hosted by
their four children and eight
grandchildren who travelled
from various parts of B.C.
and from Toronto for the
occasion. Cathy and Ron Lee
drove from Salmon Arm with
their children Michele of
Vancouver, Kevin of Toronto
and Mark.

From Whistler came Arv
Pellegrin while Mel and Lidia
Edwards with sons Sean and
Bryce arrived from Pitt
Meadows. Lorne and Marg
Pellegrin travelled from
Kamloops with their sons
Grant and twin daughters
Janet and Laura.

The master of cermeonies
for the occasion was grand-
son Kevin Lee while grace
before dinner was said by
another grandson, Sean Ed-
wards.

She was born rich. She
grew up, literally, in an
European castle, with maids,
tutors, butlers, and chauf-
feurs to look after her.

She had the good life, some
might say.

But something was missing
from her life. She was rest-
less.

She met, married, and di-
voreed a rich doctor.

Then she found what she
was sure would make her
happy. She married a movie
director and lived in glam-
orous Hollywood.

‘That, for sure, is the good
life, some would say. But that
marriage ended in divorce
too.

There followed some more
restless years, back in
Europe.

On one occasion she went,
out of curiosity, to a lecture
by Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a
medical missionary. -
weitzer had known wealth,
success, and fame as a
musician and theologian, but
at the age of 30 retrained as a
medical doctor and chose to
work in a remote corner of
Africa.

training as a nurse and
working at his hospital in
Africa.

Changing bandages, bath-
ing bodies, feeding mal-
formed lepers, could this be
the good life for someone who
had been pampered by
wealth?

Yes, she would tell you,
she had at last found the good
life.

This true story reminds me
of a book I've been reading
about growing and
wiser.

When you're young, the
writer says, you are often
ambitious to be successful in
your chosen field, secure, if
not wealthy, and able to live
it up in your spare time.

That's the good life, ac-
cording to the drgams of
many young people.

But there comes a time
when you realize something
is missing.

Maybe it happens when
you turn forty, or fifty, that
you start asking if you've
really done with your life,
yet, something that makes
you truly content.

It’s often in the last half of
your life, the writer sug-
gests, that we discover that
the good life is found in re-
lating to others with open-
ness and generosity. It be-
comes more important to be
kind than to be rich and
successful.

A man called Jesus was
very young when he realized
the good life is found in how
we relate to others, and
through them God. It’s too
bad so many of us come to
realize, only in the last half of
life, that Jesus was right.
