CITY OFFICIALS THREATEN THEM Girls Allowed in the Boxes and Other Acts Showing Disregard of the Lawful Requirements. The International music “hall has threats and intreaties have been paid little attention. License Inspector Barr plainly told the management that if the house was not run ina more orderly manner the license would be revoked. This had the desired effect fora few nights only. Mayor Scott has upon several occa- sions warned the proprietor against al- lowing disreputable characters to fre- quent the boxes. . On several occasions drunken persona have become involved in difficulties “behind the scerics” that came near ending in bloode! ed. ‘The women, actresses take occasion to THE HOTEL CORRIDOR. That appearances are sometimes de- ceptive isa homily asold as the hills, yet, like all old saws, it’contains a germ oftruth. Acase inhand is J. H. Sus- mann, the C. P. R. mining expert, who at a cursory glance, seems unfitted for rigid toil, yet he is an indefatigable worker and has just completed an ex- haustive survey of the mines and geolog- ical iti Rossland, in @ space of time that would tax the ability ofa man with aniron conatitu- tion. Mr. Susmann was eeen in the Holel Allan corridors by a Recorp man last evening, but did not degire to talk for publication, for ashe sayé himeelf, his opinions are reserved for his employers. It is when talking to the expert that some idea may be gainell of the grim, determined energy of the man by the play of his features. Mr. Susmann had completed his re- port about the Rossland district and sent it in some timeago. Although he would not the of {THE GREAT WESTERN SOLD The Price Is Sald to be $100,000. With $25.000 Down--Balance in January and February. WORK TO BE PUSHED YIGOROUSLY Gov,. C. H. Mackinosh Buys for the British American Organ- ization. Some time ago an option was given CO. H. Mackintosh on the Great Western mine until the 5th day of this month. It was afterwards extended to the 12th the report, ‘some idea of its contents may be gained when the fact of the C. P. R.’s great hurry to reach RossJand is considered. Judging by this the report must have been most’ favorable tothe camp, for it is safe to say had the report been otherwise, the great company would have been in‘ no hurry to reach here. i 8. R. Reid, the veteran newspaper man, who has deserted the muses to follow the golden igna fatus that glim- mers before the prospector, is in the city from the Christina lake district, where he is i: din some and y the deal was closed. The price being understood to be $100,000, with $25,000 down and the balance in January and February. Mr. Macintosh has purchased the prop- erty for his company, the British Amer- ican Corporation, which has a capital stock of $7,500,000, one half of which has already been paidin. The governor says his company.is acquiring mining prop- erty for the purpose of working it, so the Great Western will no doubt be develop- ed with energy and ina systematic man- ner. This property lies-within the cor- porate limits of Rossland and has al- oceupy the boxes with male atihough tirae and again the officials have warned the house against such action. It is not an unfrequent sight to see the boys in the public hall drinking beer and we suppose any thing else they might desire.’ These things are not in accordance with the general understand- ing as to how this place was to be run, when it was licensed, and is no doubt much yorse than the public under- stands. ‘The mayor and councilmen were pledged before election against such places and we understand will be more forcible in their demands that it be kept running withiu the bounds of de- cency, or their licenae will be revoked. Not long ince, a- formal dance was given to a cditple of actresses and one of them announced that no “decent woman should attend,” . Even though the girls are kept out of the boxes as they have been at intervals the men who wish to are permitted to go into thé “blue room” and into ‘the dressing rooms of the actresses and get drank. This is only “whipping the devil around the stump,” and is worse than the box rustling business. It is plainly the purpose of the pres- ent proprietor to disregard the law and tbe orders ofthe mayor to the utmost extent possible, and avoid having his house closed, which so farhe has suc- ceeded in doing, but it is more than likely he will be held to a strict account as the law has been giyen him. Mr. Reid is the man, who found an immense boulder in the Chris- tina lake district, which forms a link of @ past generation from the fact that it was covered with Indian characters. These strange disigns were carved in the rock and even the winds and rain storms of ages had failed to entire'y erase the colors with which they had been prfnted. There are those who hint darkly that the fertile brain of Mr. Reid is reepon- sible for the charactere. They say that Mr. Reid as resourceful as King Solo- men with his numerous wives, carved ‘and painted the rock himself in order to have the district advertised. When seen in the hotel Kootenay car- riders, Mr. Reid said that Chrirtina lake was rich in mineral and would prove a valuable tributary to Rossland. Now and again one comes across & man whose experiences in the hands of a Bret Harte, or other noted descriptive writers, would form the subject matter for a thrilling story that would enthrall the ‘populace. In such instances truth proves stranger than fiction. Such are the experiences of J. A. Jacobs; who is registered atthe Butte, and ‘who has chaged the illusive will-o’-the-wisp, gold over three continents. He was in Cali- fornia ig 49; in the Black hills during its palmiest davs, and in Australia dur- ways been das one of the most promising mining claims in the camp. It is claumed by a number of cxperts that it has the mother lode of the north belt. Lying directly east of the Le Roi, War Eagle and Centre Star, it seems probable that it ma; have any or even all on their ledges. The principal stock- holders in the company which have sold, are; J. B. Jones, Charles Barr, Charles E. Warren and John M. Burke. They also own the Weat Le Roi and Josie, which is ramored to be under option to the same company that bought the Great Western, This is probably not true as one of the stockholders stated that the Great Western was being sold in order to get money to work the Weat Le Roiand Josie. ANOTHER MISTAKE CORRECTED City May Repurchase Its Debentures at any Time It Has the Money. In an interview with Alderman Fra- serof the finance committee, Mayor Scott and City Solicitor McLeod it was loday learned that the city may call in its debentures any time it sees fit. Ald. Raymer brought the matter up before the council meeting last Tuesday even- ing. Owing toa report in the Miner he said the impression had gone abroad that there was s provision in the agree- ment which pr vided against .the city ing the excilement there. He has sifted the scorched eands of South America and been through a.1 the South Africa boom. Like many another Johannesbrrg man he has tound his way to Rossland, the great mining camp of the Ks ited inside of 20 years. The mayor proved that there was no provision to that effect and furthermore showed that there was a provincial law which made it optional with a munici- ite nor is it probable that he will tarry here for the alluring prospects of the Klon-|¢p, beckon him onward. Sol. Cameron’s familiar face was seen about tye corriders of the Butte hotel lastevening. Mr. Cameron took run up from Northport, where he has been constructing the Lee Roi smelter, and left again today. When seen hy a Recogp man he was just as jolly as of yore, and said that wherever he went he would have a longing fondness for Rossland. Work onthe Le Roi smel- ter he said was progressing rapidly. in two weeks’ time the mechanical depart- mept would be finishe!, bnt he could not say how soon the -:::Iter would be started. strument had been used in at blood lettiug. Under the provincial act a city also has the privilege of incurring a debt of $300,000. Any municipality may with the consent ofits electors incur a debt of 20 per cent. of its assessed value. The assessed value of Rossland is $1’500- 000 and 20 per cent. of this is $300,000. SHORT SKIRTS THE BEST. Mrs. Lawrence Adds an Opinion About the New Women Fashion. Rossland, Nov. 17th, 1897. Eprror Recorp:—With reference to the short skirt controversy, I wish to re- mark, the weather we are enduring at present, isome of the strongest argu- ment that can be offered in favor of short skirts. In fact there is no?comfort in return- ing from a forced or otherwise outing, with bedraggled skirts, and I ama warm advocate of common ‘sense apparel of comfort, which aids and adds materially tothe comfort of our well being and to the discharge of your duties. I would suggest a three quarter skirt and leather leggins, which can be made to appear graceful, suitable and conduc- ive to comfort and health. Mra. Lottie Lawrence. Rossland Club to Move.
