Everyone has_ his/her
own way of celebrating
Christmas.

It is a time of merriment,
of giving and receiving gifts,
atime of feasting and reunion
and, hopefully, of at least a
few days “olf work.”

Wherever intoxicating
beverages are used for cel-
ebration, there is a tendency
to overindulge . .. with all
the hazards that can trigger.
The pressure to buy ex-
pensive, often unnecessary,
gifts can place _an unhealthy
strain on the budget, which
in turn puts a strain on family
relationships.

If there. is no deeper
significance to Christmas
than spending a lot of money,
gadding about from party to
party getting an ever-in-
creasing hangover (in the
head and above the belt)
».. then we would be better
off to forget about Christmas
once and for all.

The key to truly en-
joying Christmas is to be
found in the realization that
it is first and foremost, a holy
day. :

Not a holy day in the
weak, sentimental sense of
clinging to some ancient
tradition that has no signifi-
cance for our modern day.
Rather, it is the celebration
of the most important birth
our world has ever hosted in
all its history.

Jesus Christ did not

riginate in that manger in
Bethlehem. He has always
existed, he is the one who

created the entire universe
and who, even now, sustains
it in an orderly fashion.
(Colossians 1:16-17, St. John
1:1-14)

His birth, nearly 2,000
years ago, was his way of
showing his love for man-
kind. Laying aside his great
eternal glory, he humbly
came among us, teaching,

showing compassion, chal-.

lenging evil, and then giving
his own life on Calvary’s
Cross in order that we could
be freely pardoned. |

He demonstrated his
power over death by rising
from his grave in triumph.
(Not only is he the source of

- life by creation, he is also the

giver of eternal life by his
death and resurrection.) No
wonder the angel declared to
the frightened shepherds:
“Do not be afraid: I bring you
good news of great joy, that
will be for all the people!”
(Luke 2:10) in

Christmas fittingly as you
come to understand and res-
pond to the true significance
of Christ coming into our
world. :

He did not come to con-
demn, but to save, to restore,
to give hope and purpose to
your life,

Accept this good news,
experience his grace and for-
giveness, and go on your way
through life honoring him
and sharing the good news

about him, not only in a.

verbal witness, but by deeds
of unaffected kindnéss and
compassion and goodwill.

In that way, you will be
able to celebrate the true
spirit of Christmas every day
of the year, and every year of
your life.
