summary Tuesday of the findings of an investigation into the cause
of the fire.

Investigations supervisor Al Johnston, contacted at his
Vancouver office, told the Castlegar News the report said lack of

spark from a welding torch caught fire under a double arbor edger.

Statements in a transcript of CanCel’s internal investigation
interviews indicate the welders were both welding at the same
time without being assigned a “spark chaser,” were not aware that
the sawmill area posed a high fire hazard, and were not required to
obtain welding permits,

Transcript statements also indicate that the company's fire
chief was not notified of the sprinkler supply cutoff and that the
sawmill had discontinued ‘its practice of cleaning inflammable
sawdust out of the sawmill at least twice yearly.

Not Proposition 13, Says Premier

‘Partnership’ Needed

the NEC will not receive
federal funds which he hoped
would ‘cover four salaries
over a 14-week period and
provide part of the $18,000 it
must receive from other
sources in order to receive
an extra $9,000 from Na-
tional Museums of Canada.

He said the rejection of
the application by the NEC
—which was allocated only
$9,000 in federal core fund-
ing—was “extremely unfor-

-tunate, since the centre
“needed the work this grant
would have financed.”

But. he said the re-
mainder of the federal core
funding, combined with
about $3,000 in grants from
Regional District of Central
Kootenay, municipalities and
electoral areas, donations
and retail sales, should allow
the centre “to continue the
centre's program into mid-

close tomorrow,” Bloom said.
“But we're in the same boat

yet set a date for a visit here
by “consultants” who would
examine the centre's fund-
ing problems. He said the
federal agency's latest letter
cited recent government
cutbacks and the critical
state of cultural programs,

Premier Promises Caution
In B.C. Nuclear Safeguards

The provincial govern-
ment is “looking very care-
fully" at safeguards for ura-
nium exploration and mining
in B.C., according to Pre-
micr Bill Bennett.

In a press conference
last week the premier said
there is no immediate need
for such safeguards in B.C.
but his government will
develop its own standards
when the need arises.

The premier noted that
uranium can only be mar-

keted “with the consent of
the government of Canada.”

“There's only one cus-
tomer, it depends on supply
and the economics of it have
had some swings,” Bennett
said.

“And B.C. itself is not a
purchaser of uranium. We
do not have nuclear power in
B.C., and it is not anticipated
that we need consider it
with the number of options
we have.”

Asked by the Castlegar
News about his govern-
ments attitude toward the
federal government's cur-
rent standards for handling
of nuclear materials, Ben-
nett said that if the govern-
ment of Canada has the
ability to market uranium it
must make political as well
as economic consideration to
where the reactors and
uranium will be sold.
