WorkRPLACE Barry Farynuk turns an interest in hunting and fishing into an enjoyable career Jonathan Green NEWS REPORTER When Barry Farynuk goes into work each day, he knows there is a chance he might not be going home again. “There is a certain dangerous element to the job,” he said. “You could run into just about anything back there.” Back there are all the lakes and trees, bears and cougars and all that exists in the Castlegar district BIG DOUGH FOR UFO’S The Vancouver- built flying saucer that thrilled thousands of visitors at the Canada pavilion at Expo 86 has been signed to a of this province known as British Columbia. CLEAN AIR STRATEGY Ford Motor Co. has unveiled two 1993 models that California officials say are the cleanest cars ever to come off an assembly line. Okanagan, the 24- year-old Farynuk’s background led him to choose his calling in life. “I’ve always been into hunting and fishing,” he said. To become a conservation officer, Farynuk attended Malaspina College in Nanaimo, enrolling in Rees: 0 0 T. Cue Management Officer Technology. He graduated two years later, taking a job in Vancouver as a federal fisheries officer. A year later, he was on his way to Castlegar. The role of a conservation officer is similar to that of the | RCMP, policing areas—|-} for violators, assisting the public and keeping everything in order. At work, the conservation officer’s job is broken down into two specific In his day-to-day routine, Farynuk encounters violators in both areas. “Environmental crimes and poaching really bother me,” he said. “That’s probably the reason why I’m doing this.” ‘And though dealing with violators might eventually become routine to some, Farynuk says it still gets under his skin. “I wouldn’t say you become callous to that sort of thing,” he said. But don’t get him wrong, Farynuk likes coming to work each day: “I really enjoy getting out and talking to hunters and fishermen,” he said, adding that the people and variety part of his job make it diverse. “It’s never the same old thing areas: fish and wildlife enforcement and environmental Twenty-four-year-old Barry Farynuk say: n. choose his calling in life. Not surprisingly the role of a conservation officer is dictated by the season when it comes to wildlife. Animals hunted in summer may not be fair game in winter, the same with fish. Environmental problems, though, are adifferent story. “They can happen any time of the year,” he said. The province is divided up Environmental Watchdog into six regions, Castlegar being located in the Kootenay region. Those six regions are then divided up into some 50 districts, with this being the Castlegar district. The boundaries include Slocan City to the north, Blueberry Paulson to the West, the U.S. border to the south and the Salmo-Creston to the east. Even though Farynuk admits his is one of the smaller districts in B.C., he says he and Krause are always occupied, and appreciate any help the public can offer. “We're busy, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “We depend on the public to be our ears and eyes because we can’t be everywhere at once.” In recent times, Farynuk said people are starting to realize the state that Mother Earth is in. “In the last two years to five years, environmental awareness is way up, he said. ‘But what we now know is just the tip of the iceberg, and it’s lm Saturday, April 18, 1992 Answers to today’s Crossword Puzzle and Cryptoquip TILTY MESIHU[T/EMBRIATVIE[L MMPI IS[A Ri EME TIAILlE/REBO[RIAITIERBAINITIS A[S|TIE|R|S|UIN|R] I /S[E/SIE[R| Vi TI(ClE|s E|TMERIAITIS DIAITIE AJLIULIA Ae DOORS OW BAO MIAIGIN[E[T E|LIL|Y Ml BIE[AINIS A|GIRIA AlE|R[O SEER OED CiH]1(ClE/A/S|TIE|R|BlOIN|N/E|T MENIU/D/E A[T|T|RIA|C|T A|DIE[E|MMESIO[N| T/A S[LI[AlY MS|1/D/E/SMECIO[RINJE[R O/B] TIAL!
