HUSBANDSDESERTED AT YANCOUYER —_——_—__—_ erried on the Gurboat Wheeling and Wives Taken Eack to Camp Without Their Husbands. —_——_—————_ While the United States gunboat Wheeling was at Vancouver recently, E en route for Manifa, two sailors numed Duff and Porter, both San Francisco x men, deserted the vessel, The mere fact of the desertion of two sailors is nothing uncommon, but if the story told in the Vancouver Province of March 3 ia true the cause of the deser- tion of the two men was @ most unusual one, The Province clainas to have the story from Orderly Brown, even after | Commander Burrell of the Wheeling had called all hands on deck and announced that he would severely punish anyone whoshould divulge the facte in the o ccording to Brown the eailors desert- ed because, while in Alaska, they had pen forced to marry two native women. While the Wheeling was cruising in were tvo Indian murdercrs who had committed a most revolting crime. ‘Landinga party of marines the comman- der marched to the rancherie and de- manded the murderers that they might be taken to Sitka for trial. The chief had about 60 armed Indians at the would agree to let Commander Burrell This wae done and the] imen were acquitted. 2 Through this trial the sailora became ey friendly with the Indians, often isiting the rancherie, and two dusky omen fell in love with Duff and Porter, ho were two strapping fellows‘and had B reputation for bravery. The sailora ere willing tobe admired and spent pouch of their chore time with the In- oveto the woman, and the circum- tances were such that he demanded the mento marry them. The crew was ined up on deck and the women told to pick cut theie lovers. They lost no fiey offered to give them two monthe’ y; and even commander Burrell tried Pgetthe chief to compromise, but he as atubborn, refasing to leave the ves- without a fight unless the two men purried his relatives in white man’s hion, The Crescent Dry Goods Co., Lid. Embarrassing Predicament in Which the Millionaire Once Found Himself, Cecil Rhodes, the south African mil- Hionaire, like other great men, is care- leas about money, says the New York world. On one occasion he received a command to dine and sleep at Winclsor castle and turned up at Paddington sta- tion with no money. His private secre- tary bought his ticket for him and gave him for pocket money a couple of sovereigns, which was all he had with him. When Rhodes reached the old castle above the Thames and began dressing to dine with Queen Victoria he laid the two sovereigns upon the table, intending to tranafer them to the pockets of hia evening unmentionables, but forgot them when he wentdown. He dined, had a few words with Her Majesty, re- tired, smoked and went back to his bedroom. ‘The money wasgone. The servants, accustomed to generous fees, naturally supposed that the money had been delicately left there for them, and of course Mr. Rhodes could neither ex- plain the circumstances. to them. nor trouble his royal hostess about so slight @ matter. The next morning he was driven to the station in one of the queen’s ‘carri- ages. Luckily he had his return ticket and reached London, like Dick Whit- tington, and many another. famoua man, without a penny in his pocket. Unlike Whittington, he didn’t have even a cat. ° However, he had only to walk to his of- fices to find the penny he needed and othera to keep it company, TO TEST ARCTIC CURRENTS. Whalers From San Francisco Have Assumed Task. San Francisco, March 18,—A task which has been nndartaken in the inter ests both of science and commerce is to be begun this week in the voyage of . whalera from San Francisco to the Arc- tic ocean, to test the Arctic currents. The effort to secure facts about the cur- rents andof the existence ofa circum- polar current was inaugurated by the Society gf Philad backed by the United States govern- ment.’ Fifty patent casks of a peculiar shape have been constructed in Ban Franciavo, and will be sentouton th United States revenue cutter “Bear, on the vessles of the Pacific steam whaling fleet and on those of Liebes & Co., to be distributed in different parts of. the . ocean, then to be picked up by vessels which shall pass them later, and thus it is hoped to determine the currents of the Arctic and the chance ofan open passage around the pole from the Atlan- tic to the Pacific. The firat five casks will be taken to the north by the whal- era of Liebes & Co. to start during the Present week. Twenty more will be taken by the vessels of the whaling com- pany within a week,-and the remaining 26 will be taken on the Bear, Transfer of Liquor License.
