An examination of 200 im- potent men found they were more likely than others to be smokers and to have evi- dence of impaired blood flow to the penis, a possible cause of impotence, said Dr. Alvaro Morales, chairman of the ur- ology department at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. “It is by no means con- clusive evidence,” Morales said Friday at the annual meeting of the American of Sex Educa- SUMMER dayschool rades one to four, tor call 365-5180. The success of the Lapa with rats was recognized as major step in the right a ection at the annual meeting im Dallas of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. It will be years before it is known whether such a treat- ment will eventually allow people to leave their wheel- chairs, but the experiments appear to uncover an area where until very recently there was no hope for re- covery, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports. In the experiments, per- formed by Dr. Michael Feh- lings in Torento Western Hospital's centre for spinal cord injury, a continuous low-level electrical current was applied to rats whose spinal cords had been pointed to induce the type of incur- injury that has left thousands of people in wheel- chairs, After eight weeks, the rats treated with the current could walk again. A control group of rats that had not been treated showed no im- Only in the past couple of years have researchers been able to persuade tissue of the centry nervous system to grow. That work, by Dr. Albert Aguayo of Montreal and others, was the first glimmer of hope for paraplegics, but no one has been able to re- store the spinal cord's ability to transmit messages from the brain to the rest of the body. “Armed with that know- ledge that they (nerve fibres) can grow, it is possible that people in wheelchairs can someday have some restor- ation of function,” said Dr. Charles Tator, head of the Toronto Western centre. “We really believe that it is possible. Now, we don't know if, that's going to be one month from now or 20 years from now or even longer, but the fact that it is possible is what encourages us to keep going. The General Motors Neur- otrauma Award presented to Fehlings was one of two awards given to the 28-year- old researcher for his work. Another experiment, which may ultimately result in a technique for salvaging the ability to walk for ac- cident victims with spinal cord injuries, was also award- ed first prize in its category by the association. jUCES BLOOD FLOW ie experiment measured the effect of blood flow on the functional ability of nerve tissue in the spinal cord. After an initial accident, further damage to the nerves in the spinal cord occurs be- cause blood flow to the area is reduced. Oxygen in the blood is vital to the spinal cord just as it is to the brain, Fehlings said. If blood flow to the area can be increased shortly after an accident, some of the function of the spinal cord may be saved, he said. If as few as one-quarter of the nerve fibres are sal- vaged, he said, the accident victim probably will be able to walk again, even though some more delicate motion may be lost. Tator and Fehlings hope to have some recommendations within the next few months for drug treatments to be used on spinal card accident victims to salvage as much nerve tissue as possible after an accident. Evidence of the relation- ship has been lacking until the last few years, when sev- eral researchers found in a handful of patients that stop- ping smoking can lead to return of sexual fugetion, he said. At least half of all cases of impotence are thought to be due to some physical problem rather than toa psychological difficulty, Morales said. FINDS CAUSE About half of the cases with physical causes are be- lieved to be the result of a problem in the blood vessels that supply the penis, he said. These are the cases that could be aggravated by smoking. Morales emphasized a much larger group of pati- ents would be needed to confirm these findings. He also said the study didn’t consider whether the link between smoking and impotence might reflect the fact that smokers were also more likely to be coffee drinkers, for example, or more likely to be under un- usual stress. The 1979 U.S. Surgeon General's report on smoking and health identified smoking as one of the most important causes of so-called peripheral vascular disease, or damage to small arteries, said Mor- ales. It’s reasonable to assume, therefore, that smoking could disrupt blood flow in the small arteries that supply the penis, he said. To determine whether that was the case, he and his col- leagues measured blood pressure in the penis. and found one in five smokers had abnormal penile blood pres- sure. In contrast, only one in 12 RENT THIS SPACE 365-5210 kers had abnormal penile blood pressure, Mor- ales found. “The blood supply seems to be impaired in the smokers,” he said. He also found about 16 per cent of his group of 200 im- potent men were heavy smokers.
