Some of the newspapers of the province and Dominion are fair and others are not. Some of them beat the air upon mere rumors, among which is the British Columbia Mining Record. It says: , “From Rossland comes a com- Pplaint that preference is given in that town to the employment of American miners over Canadians. If this be true and the nationality of the werkman allowed to inter- fere with his obtaining work, it is an outrage which should not be countenanced or allowed. The fitness of the man for the work re- quired to be done should be the only test. In Canada we take broader views of such matters than they do in the United States. There a lian workman is regarded .a8an alien and refused employ- ment. Herein the Dominion an American is not barred from get- ting work because of his nation- ality. But if tae complaint coming from Rossland be true, that Ameri- ‘can mine owners will only employ American miners to the exclusion of Canadians, it is time to consider whether Canada should not put analien law in force tu protect her own people. We like Ameri- cans and like to have them living amougst us and enjoying the ad- vantages of our country, but they taust learn the principles of fair play if they wish our friendship to continue. We trust the com- plaint that has reached us is un- founded.” The only possible color that could be given to the complaint is that the mines are owned princi- pally by Americans. David Wilson Gives His Ideas About Free Gold:- 4 “I believe there ia more gold in the gravel bars of eastern Oregon than in Ethe mines about Johannesburg,” said f David Wilson of Ontario, Or. “The ‘presence of gold iu that section haa been known for a number of years. The gold is ao fine that until recently no device has been invented - which will eave it.. Last fall a machine was invented by a resident of that section which will positively save every color. 4 This opens up a wonderful field for placer mining. At present the device will only handle a limited amount of gravel aday. If it is perfected so as to operate on a large-scale there ia no limit to ite possibilities. The mater- ial carrying gold is a uniform deposit of gravel underlying the entire sec- tion. How deep these gravel beds ux- tend there is no means of knowing. The richness of this gravel can be |" better understood when it is said that from gravel taken from-the bottom of a caisson 16 feet below the bed of the rivor, where a bridge was being con- structed across the Snake river, sume miners washed out $1 to the cubic yard = It.is not all as rich as this, but it is safe to say the average will be 50 centsa yard The principle of the machine mentioned is to force the concentrates, consisting largely of biack sand, containing the free gold, through a bath of quicksilver, by which all of the fine particles of gold ‘are amalgamated, after which only the ordinary process ia used to take out the goli. There have been hundreds of tl is of dollars dered in trying to save goldon a large scale. All have made the mistake of pump. ing too much water, and with too great force, which causes the flake gold to run off without coming in con- tart with the quicksilver when used on ordinary plates. I believe there is @great‘future for all that section when it is fully demonstrated that the gold can be saved, and mining can be on a ’ large scale.
