Issajenko, in an interview Friday with the Toronto Sun, blamed John son for leaving his doctor Jamie Astaphan and Mazda team coach Charlie Francis in the lurch while he's been out dancing at discos every night. “When you play games you live by codes,” she said in a telephone in terview. “If you make a mistake or something goes wrong, you accept the consequences. “You don’t back down and slaugh. ter the people you were in league with from the beginning.” The sprinter’s accusations were the first cracks in a wall of solidarity behind Johnson since he was strip- ped of his Olympic gold medal in the 100 metres two weeks ago after testing positive for steroids. She defended Francis, whom she's been in contact with since his return from Seoul, saying he has given 15 years to Canadian track and used buy meals for Johnson when he showed up for meets penniless. Now, she said, he’s being “kicked like a dog” by Johnson. Issajenko, 30, who said Francis will never coach again, added that she’s dubious about her own future with the Mazda club in ruins. NEIGHBOURHOOD HOME HARDWARE BUILDING CENTRE Old Waneta Rd., Trail 364-2588 As the revolving door of NHL broadcasting rights spun from Molsons to CBC to The Sports Network, the Vancouver Canucks got caught in the works and were improperly blamed in the botched deal. And Canuck president Pat Quinn wasn't too pleased with the accusations coming from Molsons and TSN. TSN had secured the rights to broadcast Thursday's Wings-Kings game from Molsons — which is the national broadcast rights holder for NHL games — and advertised to Vancouver TSN viewers that the game would be on TV in the Vancouver area. What TSN and Molsons had overlooked was that networks~cannot broadcast ANYother NHL game within a 50-mile radius of the city where another contest is taking place. So the Canucks squashed TSN's bid to televise Gretzky's first game in a Los Angeles jersey to Vancouver viewers {by pointing out the rule to the network Sporting Views By Brendan Nagle When TSN advised Vancouver-area viewers it would not broadcast the game to their TV sets, they went apewaste and called the network Molsons and TSN in turn blamed the Canucks for not allowing the broadcast of the game. Quinn was understandably upset with the accusation as irate hockey fans started heating up the phone lines at the Canuck head office. “Molsons tried to finger up as the culprits,” he told the Castlegar News over the phone from his Vancouver office. “But there has always been a blackout rule for the home market. We were being fingered for what we had no control over. This is not a new rule.” The rule gives a club the right to control its own home market. And Quinn has taken his home-market rights to the limit. While other games cannot be dialed in from another city while the Canucks play at home, the club does have the right to broadcast its own home games to the home market. Some may think broadcasting home games to local viewers will keep them from attending the game. But not Quinn. Last night's game was on the tube in Vancouver. “We want our fans who cannot attend in person at the Coliseum to be able to enjoy the exciting team we have assembled this year.” Using the home-market advantage, Quinn hopes to entice the coach potatoes down to the gate to purchase tickets. He is also quick to point out the franchise is looking good this year. “The Canucks are going to be improved . . . we feel more optimistic about our chances,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a real dogfight in our Uivision.” The Canucks are sporting a lot of new faces this year including rookie Trevor Linden and Castlegar's own Steve Bozek. Nelson's Greg Adams arrived at the beginning of last season and was part of what might have been the best Canuck deal since they got Tanti out of Chicago a few years ago. There was a third member of the Kootenay Connection until the final cuts came. Nelson's Darren Jensen was sent to the minors after the battle of the goaltenders was finally decided Adams, who came from New Jersey last season when Sundstrom packed his bags, wasted little time in fitting in with the Canucks. He was second in Canuck scoring behind Tony Tanti. Adams scored 36 goals and 40 assist for 76 points last season and will no doubt be shooting for bigger numbers this year. Bozek will provide the Canucks with his leadership and experience in helping the younger players come along. Provided he stays healthy, Bozek will also provide the Canucks with strong. penalty killing performances and may be used on the power play as well With the Smythe Division opening up in the wake of this summer's trade that wasn't supposed to happen, it will be difficult to pick how the teams will finish. Even though Calgary benefitted from the Gretzky deal I still see Edmonton coming out on top The only way they will lose is if the players spend the season crying about not having Gretzky to make the plays. There is still a good collection of scoring talent in Edmonton and Sather should have a master plan to assemble another winning season The Flames will finish a close second the difference in points being Edmonton's victories against the Flames over the regular season. The Kings will finish third, riding high on Gretzky's single-handed rejevenation of the perennial cellar dwelling tranchise. The Canucks and the Jets will be duelling for draft picks but I think the Canucks will make the piayorts. ine vets wilt just nave to settle for a good pick in the amateur draft CLOSE DECISION Habs defeat Stars MONTREAL (CP) — Defenceman Chris Chelios set up Mats Naslund and Gilles Thibaudeau for power-play goals in the first period to spark the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 National Hockey League victory over the Minnesota North Stars in their season-opener at the Forum on Saturday night. Bobby Smith made it a three-goal margin in the second period before Montreal goaltender Patrick Roy, making his first start of the season, was beaten by Brian MacLellan a few minutes later. BRUINS 6 WHALERS 2 HARTFORD, Conn. The Whalers had power-play goals from Ray Ferraro and Kevin Dineen and have been outscored 11-4 in lopsing their first two games. CAPITALS 6 SABRES 2 LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Dave Christian scored two goals and assisted on another as the Washington Capitals ended a four-year drought against the Buffalo Sabres at the Capital Centre with a 6-2 victory. The Capitals entered the game with a 219-5 record against Buffalo in the Capital Centre and had not beaten the Sabres there since Nv. 17, 1984 In spite of the loss, the Sabres maintain a 40-6.7 record against Washington. CANUCKS 3 WINGS 3 VANCOUVER (CP) — Detroit captain Steve Yzerman keyed a third-period rally as the listless Red Wings rebounded from a 3-1 deficit to earn a 3-3 NHL tie Saturday with the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks appeared to have the game well in hand midway through the final period. They led 3-1 and had allowed the Red Wings just two shots on goal in the preceding 30 minutes. But Yzerman awoke his slumbering teammates with a goal at 11:52 and then set up Dave Barr for the equalizer at 16:08 Mets take lead in series NEW YORK (AP) — New York scored five runs after Los Angeles reliever Jay Howell was tossed from the game for doctoring the baseball Saturday, as the Mets rallied to beat the Dodgers 84 in a cold rain to take a 2-1 lead in the National League baseball playoffs Howell, who started the eighth inning with the Dodgers ahead 4-3, was ejected when the Mets claimed he had foreign substance on his glove and umpiring crew chief Harry Wendelstedt, along with home plate umpire Joe West, found a pine tar-like substance The Dodgers used three pitchers after Howell as the Mets rallied for the victory, the go-ahead run coming on a single by Mookie Wilson. Game 4 of the best-of seven series is scheduled tonight at Shea Stadium Left-hander John Tudor will pitch for the Dodgers against right-hander Dwight Gooden, the Mets’ starter in Game 1 Saturday's game was played in a chilly drizzle but got under way as scheduled at 12:20 p.m. EDT. Howell, relieving Orel Hershiser, started the inning but didn't last long. Alejandro Pena relieved and completed a walk to Kevin McRey nolds.. Howard Johnson forced pene daar on a bunt attempt then . One out later, Johnson scored the tying run on Wally Backman's double. Pinch-hitter Len Dykstra walked and former Met Jesse Orosco relieved Pena. Wilson lined a single to center field to give the Mets the lead. After Gregg Jefferies was hit by a pitch, Orosco walked Keith Hernandez to force in another run Darryl Strawberry capped the rally with a two-run bloop- single to left field as the first batter to face Ricky Horton It was the 21st time this season the Mets rallied to win in their last at-bat. David Cone, who was knocked out after two innings as the starter of Game 2, pitched the ninth inning for New York Mets reliever Roger McDowell struck out the first two batters ip the Dodgers eighth and appeared to have ended the inning when Mike Sciosia hit a grounder back to the mound. While making his throw to first, McDowell slipped on the wet turf and his throw was wild, allowing Sciosia to move to second. Jose Gonzalez ran for Sciosia and the Dodgers loaded the bases with a single and a walk Danny Heep was sent up to pinch-hit for Hershiser, but when the Mets went to the bullpen to bring in Randy Myers, Mike Sharperson replaced Heep. Sharperson walked on a 3-2 pitch to force in a run Sharperson had walked one time in 64 plate appearance this season Hershiser pitched seven innings and allowed six hits. Game 3 was scheduled Friday night but was rained out. Dodgers 58. manager Tom Lasorda used the opportunity to come back with his ace right-hander on three days rest and give Tudor another day to recover from spasms in his right hip. During the season, Hershiser was 3-1 with a 2.17 earned-run average on three days rest, including two shutouts. Hershiser took a 3-1 lead and a two-hitter into the sixth when the Mets scored two runs on four hits. Hernandez led off the Mets seventh with a single and Straw berry followed with an opposite-field single to left field that Kirk Gibson mishandled on the wet turf Hernandez was on his way to third when he fell and was thrown out as he crawled toward the bag Strawberry moved to second on the play and McReynolds reached on third baseman Jeff Hamilton's throwing error that was juggled at first by Mickey Hatcher. After Johnson forced McReynolds at second, Gary Carter's ground single to right scored Strawberry and sent Johnson to third Backman followed with a grounder that deflected off Hatcher's glove toward second, allowing Johnson to score In the first game of the serie Hershiser blanked the Mets for eigh innings before New York rallied for three runs in the .ninth and a dramatic 32 victory Hershiser, 238, finished the regular season with 598 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking Don Drysdale's 20-year-old club record of
